Entry Requirements

  • Algerians can visit Ethiopia without a visa. 
  •  The traveler is issued a visa upon arrival. 
  • This visa is valid for a maximum total stay of 90 days within a one-year period.
  • Alongside the printed confirmation that a visa will be issued upon arrival the traveler must also have a return/onward ticket.
  • A proof of hotel accommodation is also needed, as well as an international certificate of vaccination.
  • Visitors from Algeria require a valid passport with at least two un-used pages remaining, for any necessary entry and exit stamps that may be issued. 
  • The validity of Ethiopian e-Visa starts from the date of entry into Ethiopia (not from the date of issue).
  • Ethiopia is two hours ahead of Algeria. The time zone in Ethiopia is GMT+3.
  • Travelers are expected  to declare all electronic items including DVD players,  recorders, computers and cell phones , upon entering and exiting the country.  
  • Visitors to Ethiopia must complete a customs declaration form if they intend to bring in large sums of cash.  They must  present a bank advice  notice  for cash  of more than $3000 or equivalent in foreign currency to customs officials if the currency was purchased from a local bank.
  • Before travelers can gain entry into Ethiopia with their pets, they are to provide a veterinarian good health certificate. 
  • The Ethiopian calendar is 7-8 years behind the Gregorian calendar. If dealing with official documents, you can expect the date to be written in the Ethiopian calendar.
  • Possession of illegal drugs, pornographic materials,  explosives, weapons and ammunition is prohibited in Ethiopia.  
  • There is a free import tax on 200 Cigarettes, 50 cigars 1/2 LB of tobacco,  1 l of alcoholic beverages,two bottles of perfume for all travelers. 
  • It’s illegal to carry more than 1000 birr in local currency when entering or leaving Ethiopia. If you’re found to be carrying in excess of that amount the money will be seized and a prison sentence is possible.
  • You will need an export certificate to take antiques out of the country, otherwise the items are likely to be confiscated and you may face prosecution. 
  • The climate remains relatively cool throughout the year in Ethiopia. Even in the hottest months (March to May), average highs rarely exceed 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).  
  • Owning ivory is strictly prohibited. Visitors found with ivory jewelry will be  fined between 5,000 and 25,000 birr and their items confiscated.

E-visas can be purchased in advance from the Ethiopian Immigration website. Visas on arrival are also available for tourists at Addis Ababa (Bole) International airport, at a cost of approximately $US50 for 1 month and $US75 for 3 months.
