Application requirements

Documents Angolan applicants need to provide.

  • An Angolan passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of intended departure.
  • A duly completed and signed visa application form.
  • The parents or legal guardians are to sign the form if the applicant is a minor.
  • Two identical passport-size photographs (4.5 x 3.5 cm).
  • Travel document must be completely provided bearing the purpose of travel.
  • Proof of financial capability.
  • Proof of accommodation or hotel reservations.
  • Applicants are expected to have a copy of an onward flight ticket.
  • Documentation showing applicant’s ties to the home country.

Visa type details

Visitor Visa

  • Angolans who intend to visit Malawi for tourism, visiting spouse, business or adventure are issued this type of visa.
  • The Malawi Visitor visa can also be issued as a Tourist visa, Business visa, Conference visa or transit based on the purpose for visit.
  • The visitor visa is sub-divided into single entry and multiple-entry.
  • The single entry visa is valid for 30 days or less and can be used once upon entry into Malawi.
  • The single-entry visa can be extended for a period of 60 days.
  • The multiple-entry visa is valid for six or twelve months and can be used for multiple entries within the validity period.
  • The transit visa is valid for only seven days and can be used once.
  • Applicants whose trips are being sponsored should provide a letter of invitation containing the sponsor’s name and address to his/her legal residence.
  • Applicants without full documentation will not be attended to. You are expected to submit all stipulated and required documentation. Please ask in advance before you travel.
  • The validity of a Malawian visa is 90 days although applicants are given only 30 days of stay.
  • If you intend to extend stay, you are to do so at any Malawi Immigration Offices before the end of the validity period.

Work visa

Work Visa

  • Applicants who apply for a Malawian work visa intend to work in Malawi.
  • This type of visa is issued in the form of a permit and it is known as the Temporary Employment Permit.
  • Angolans going to Malawi to take up a specific employment are required to have this permit before they can gain entry.
  • The Malawian company where the applicant has gained employment have to apply for a work permit on behalf of their employee.
  • Documents showing the employee’s level of expertise, job description and salary quota are to be provided at the embassy during the application process.
  • The work contract between the employee and employer stating the duration and conditions of the employment is also needed.
  • The applicant should have valid health insurance before entry.
  • Applicants can renew their work permit in the country. But the application should be submitted 3 months before the expiration of the permit.
  • All applicants for new TEP are required by law to wait outside Malawi until the application has been approved.
  • Applications for Temporary Resident Permits or Temporary Employment Permit should be done and processed by institutions hosting the applicant in Malawi.
  • Working in Malawi without a Temporary Employment Permit is illegal. Offenders are liable for prosecution by the Malawian Government.
  • The temporary Employment Permit can be renewed twice.
  • Only in cases when a Malawian company can not find any qualified Malawian citizen to offer the job, can the position be offered to a foreigner.
  • A Temporary Employment Permit may be renewed after two years if the holder of the permit is still engaged in the employment for which the permit was issued at the date of expiration of such Permit.

Student visa

  • The Malawi Student permit allows intending students to enter Malawi and study at any approved Educational Institution.
  • Applicants are expected to submit their application form and other supporting documents at the Immigration Headquarters or Regional Immigration Offices for processing after payment of the appropriate fees.
  • The application will be submitted to the Chief Immigration Officer for approval. Once an approval has been granted or a rejection issued, you will be formally notified.
  • Applicants are required to have a school-leaving certificate and other academic qualifications backing up the application.
  • There should be a document reflecting the applicant's financial support from self, guardians or sponsors.
  • A Student Permit can be renewed through the submission of a Student Permit Renewal Application Form and supporting documents and information at the Regional Immigration Offices or Headquarters.
  • Applications for renewal must be submitted 3 months before the expiration of the permit.
  • You would need to provide a passport and travel documents valid for at least six months.
  • The payment for the visa can be made after the visa has been approved.
  • The study visa allows its holders to work and study at the same time. They can work to support themselves and anyone depending on them.
  • Applicants are to demonstrate the capability to support themselves for the duration of their study.
  • A document showing that the applicant intends to return back to the home country is required.
  • A letter of acceptance must be provided demonstrating that an applicant has been offered a place on a full time course of study at a recognized educational institution.
