Basic Travel Requirements for Ethiopians visiting Japan

Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Japanese Visa.

  • A valid Ethiopian passport with at least 3 months validity beyond the date you plan to leave Japan.

Japan Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • Ethiopians who intend to travel to Japan for tourism, vacation, sightseeing or other leisure activities are eligible to apply for the Japanese tourist visa.
  • The Japanese tourist visa also allows its holder to visit friends and families residing in Japan.
  • Your Ethiopian visa used for the visa application must be valid for at least 3 months from your intended departure date from Japan.
  • You are expected accurately fill a visa application form and sign it. You should note that incomplete visa application forms may delay the processing of your visa request.
  • 1 recently-taken passport-size photograph must be submitted with the completed visa application form.
  • As proof that you intend to leave Japan once your visa expires, you are required to submit a copy of your round-trip flight reservation. This document should show your full name and the flight information, including entry and exit dates.
  • You must also prove that you can cater to your financial needs while in Japan (that is, comfortably spend at least $121 per day) by submitting your bank statements, a certificate of income or tax payment issued by a public agency or a certificate of deposit balance.
  • A document showing the purpose of your travel to Japan such as an invitation letter from your host, a cover letter or a travel itinerary must be submitted.
  • You are required to present a copy of your hotel or private accommodation for the entire duration of your stay in Japan.
  • If you are visiting relatives or friends, you are to provide proof of kinship or document showing the nature of your relationship with your host.
  • Proof of payment of the ETB 752 visa fee must be submitted.

Japan Business Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The Japanese business visa is issued to foreign nationals who intend to travel to Japan for business purposes.
  • The business visa permits its holder to attend business meetings, conferences, summits, trade fairs or other related events in Japan.
  • Holders of the Japanese business visa can sign business contracts while in the country but are not permitted to take up employment.
  • Your Ethiopian visa used for the visa application must be valid for at least 3 months from your intended departure date from Japan.
  • You are expected accurately fill a visa application form and sign it. You should note that incomplete visa application forms may delay the processing of your visa request.
  • 1 recently-taken passport-size photograph must be submitted with the completed visa application form.

  • An invitation letter from the partner company in Japan must be submitted.
  • If there have been previous relations between your company and the partner company, you should provide documents to prove this.
  • If you are attending a conference or other business events, you should provide proof that you will be participating in the event.
  • A confirmed itinerary of your engagements in Japan should be submitted.
  • A letter of guarantee by the party that will be responsible for your business expenses while in Japan must be submitted.
    • A certified copy of the business licence of the sponsoring company should be included.
  • Proof of payment of the ETB 752 visa fee must be submitted.

Japan Student Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The Japanese general student visa is issued to international students who want to travel to Japan to study as undergraduates at an accredited college or university.
  • To be eligible to apply for the general student visa, you must have received an admission offer from a Japanese school.
  • The Ethiopian passport used for your visa application must be valid.
  • You are required to accurately complete a visa application form.
  • 1 passport-size photograph (3x4 cm) taken with a white background must be submitted with the completed and signed visa application form.
  • You must submit the original and 1 photocopy of your Certificate of Eligibility (a Certificate of Eligibility is issued before a visa application by a regional immigration authority under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice, as evidence that you have met the requirements for landing in Japan).
  • A Certificate of Eligibility makes obtaining a visa very easy for you.
  • To obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE), the following documents are needed:
    • A completed CoE application form.
    • A clearly-taken passport photo meeting the Japanese visa photo specification(s). It must be taken with a white background.
    • A copy of your admission letter from the educational institution you are to study in Japan.
    • Proof of financial means for the entire duration of your studies.
  • Proof of payment of the visa fee must be submitted.
  • A multiple-entry visa costs ETB 1,504 for processing.
  • The application for a Certificate of Eligibility will be made on your behalf by your host in Japan so you should contact them and make the necessary documents available.

Japan Transit Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The Japanese transit visa is issued to foreign nationals who intend to travel to a third country through Japan.
  • Travellers to Japan for a maximum period of 15 days can apply for a transit visa.
  • Your Ethiopian passport must be valid.
  • You are required to complete a visa application form and sign it.
  • A copy of your return ticket to your country of origin or an onward ticket to a third country must be provided.
  • You are required to show proof of sufficient funds to defray all your expenses while in Japan.
  • Proof of the payment of the visa fee must be provided, The visa fee for a Japanese transit visa is ETB 175.
