Vietnam Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The Vietnam tourist visa is available to Ethiopians with the intention of traveling to Vietnam.
  • This visa is valid for 15 to 30 days, however, it can be extended.
  • Travelers holding an amount of up to VND 150,000,000 must have it declared at entry.
  • If you plan to travel from Vietnam to Laos by land, you should request that an adhesive visa be affixed to your passport instead of a detachable one.
  • Hotels in Vietnam require you to present your passport upon check-in so that your stay can be registered with local police.
  • If you stay at a private residence (for example, at the residence of family or friends), you must comply with registration requirements by visiting the local police station and registering your stay within 24 hours. 
  • Certificate of vaccination against yellow fever, tuberculosis, dengue fever, zika, and avian influenza (H5N1).
  • Crime in Vietnam is rated high. However, exercising vigilance and the same commonsense security precautions you would in any major metropolitan city in the United States will greatly contribute to an incident-free visit.
  • Exercise caution in choosing ground transportation upon arrival at the airport in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
  • The use of motorcycle taxis (known as “xe om”) is discouraged. Motorcycle taxis are unregulated and unsafe, and the helmets provided to riders offer little to no protection against injury in the case of an accident.
  • Recreational drugs available in Vietnam can be extremely dangerous and can result in death.
  • Drugs sold in Vietnam may be fake, synthetic, or laced with toxic ingredients undetectable to the buyer. You should also avoid purchasing liquor from street vendors, as the authenticity of the contents cannot be assured.
  • Persons violating Vietnamese laws, even unknowingly, may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. 
  • Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Vietnam are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines, or even the death penalty.
  • Vietnamese law prohibits the export of antiques. However, these laws are vague and unevenly enforced. Customs authorities may inspect and seize your antiques without compensating you, and the determination of what is an “antique” can be arbitrary.
  • If you purchase non-antique items of value, you should retain receipts and confirmation from shop owners and/or the Ministry of Culture and the Customs Department to prevent seizure when you leave the country.
  • The Government of Vietnam maintains strict control over all forms of political speech, so be careful not to indulge in any political talks.

  • The Vietnam business visa is for Ethiopian business travelers who have the intention of engaging in business activities in Vietnam.
  • Business travelers during meetings with their partners in Vietnam can negotiate and sign business contracts.
  • This visa also allows foreigners to attend conferences, trade fairs, and business summits in the country.
  • Applicants are expected to be vaccinated against yellow fever before traveling to Vietnam.
  • Travelers with the intention of attending conferences while they are in the country are expected to have pre-registered for the conference beforehand. Proof of this registration will be asked at the consulate.
  • An official letter of invitation from the company in Vietnam, written on the company’s letterhead is required must be provided. The letter should state both the duration and purpose of your visit.
  • A letter from your employer stating approval of your business leave is required. The letter should also state your job position and the duration of your leave.
  • If the responsibility of your finances would be taken up by either the company you are meeting with or your employer, this should be clearly stated in the letter.
  • Ethiopians on a business visa are not permitted to receive payment for the services they render while they are in the country.
  • You also cannot take up a course to study in one of the institutions of learning in Vietnam.
