Basic Travel Requirements for Indians visiting Germany

Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a German Visa.


  • A Schengen visa application form that has been appropriately filled and signed.
  • An original passport with a validity of more than 6 months from the traveler's entry date.
  • Two blank pages of the passport for visa stamps.
  • Identical passport-sized photographs which fulfill the visa photo requirements set by the Schengen states.
  • Health insurance with a coverage of £30,000 for the entire Schengen area.
  • Proof of accommodation provision for the traveler.
  • Host details (name, address, passport details, etc) for travelers who have hosts in Germany. A letter of invitation from the host should back this up.
  • Bank statements dating back to the last 3 months of consistent use. There can be 0ther proof of financial sustenance as well.
  • A detailed flight itinerary.
  • A declaration of accuracy of information. 
  • Application form should be completed in either English or German.
  • Return ticket to India or Onward ticket to the other country.

Is the cost of living for foreigners expensive in Germany?

Germany is not expensive for foreigners as it is a budget-friendly country that helps travelers save money while they are there. Accommodation and food are quite cheap in Germany. The only thing to look out for is the fare for common high-speed trains as they can be very expensive.


Can the invitee inquire about the status and outcome of the visa procedure?

In principle, information on the visa procedure is only given to those involved in the procedure, i.e the applicant himself. They can, however, give the rights to another person most especially family members.


Is it possible to extend a German visa?

Yes, it is possible to extend the validity of visas only in exceptional cases. The extension must be done at the foreigners’ office covering your area of residence. If your German visa extension is on the grounds of compelling personal reasons or late entry, it costs 30 euros but you do not have to pay fees if your visa extension is due to a natural disaster or for humanitarian reasons.
