Basic Travel Requirements for Kenyans visiting Norway

Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Norwegian Visa.

  • National passport which is valid for at least three months after the intended date of exiting the country. The passport should have two blank pages at the time of application.
  • Duly completed and signed visa application form.
  • One colour passport sized photograph with the full face taken with a white background. The passport must not be older than six months.
  • Bank statement from the last three months prior to the period of visa application. This is proof of a sufficient and continuous flow of funds during your time in the country.
  • Valid travel insurance which has a coverage of €30,000 for medical insurance.
  • Proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay in Norway.
  • Copy of return flight ticket.
  • Proof of civil status.
  • Copy of travel itinerary.

General Requirements for Norway Visa

Norway Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa allows Kenyans to visit Norway for tourism.
  • With the tourist visa, foreigners can visit family and friends in the country.
  • Norway is part of the Schengen countries. Norway is a member of the four European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
  • An original, signed Kenyan passport with at least six-month validity is required.
  • Two identical 35mm x 45mm passport-sized photographs are required.
  • Applicants of this visa cannot study while they are in Norway.
  • A signed letter from your employer containing the duration of your leave, the number of years you have been employed, terms of employment, and the company’s contact details are required for employed applicants.
  • A cover letter stating your purpose of visit to Norway.
  • Copy of residence permit for non-Kenyans applying for this visa from Kenya is required.
  • If you are under the age of 18, the original copy of your birth certificate should be provided. Minor’s traveling without their parents is required to have the notarized consent signed by both their parents.
  • Copy of flight itinerary must be provided, this must show the dates and time of entry and exit to Norway.
  • Applicant must have proof of medical travel insurance. It must have a coverage of  € 30,000. This is valid for all Schengen states.
  • Copy of your bank statement from the last six months is required.
  • Proof of payment of visa fee.
  • You will need to provide proof of your civil status in the form of a marriage certificate, birth certificate of children, death certificate of spouse, or ration card, if applicable.
  • Kenyans cannot be paid for the services they render while they are in the country.
  • If you intend to attend conferences while you are in Norway, proof that you have registered and paid to attend the conference is required.
  • Kenyans are not allowed to seek public funds in the country.
  • Retired persons should possess a pension statement or documents showing other financial support from the last 6 months.

Norway Student Visa Eligibility & Requirements


  • A Kenyan who wants to stay and study in Norway will require either a student visa.
  • If you plan on staying in Norway for more than three months, you will have to apply for a residence permit.
  • The Norway student visa and the residence permit do not refer to the same document.
  • To be eligible for Norway Student Visa or Residence Permit, you must provide the official letter of acceptance issued by your hosting Norway university or educational institute or polytechnic.
  • You must provide proof of your financial ability so as to support yourself financially during your entire study period.
  • Receipt that you have paid the application fee of NOK 5,300 must be provided.
  • Evidence that you have  sufficient financial funds for the entire period of study must be provided. You need to prove you have access to NOK 116,369 for 10 months (academic year).
  • Proof of accommodation must be provided.
  • A copy of your UDI document must be provided.
  • The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration requires the money to be deposited in a Norwegian bank account., this is a general rule. 
  • Applicants are advised to make sure their passport is valid for at least three (3) months after the end of their intended travel and that it has been issued no later than ten (10) years ago.
  • Two recent 35mm x 45mm passport photographs with white background must be provided.
  • The embassy or consulate you are using reserves the right to ask for additional documents or a second appearance for an interview in special cases.

Norway Work Visa Eligibility & Requirements


  • The work visa is eligible for Kenyans intending to work in Norway.
  • If you apply for the work visa, you are eligible to a residence permit. 
  • However, there are two types of work permit, 12-month and season work permit. A seasonal worker works for three months.
  • To obtain a work permit, you should be between the age range of 18- 30 years old.
  • A valid passport is required.
  • Employer’s information on the foreigner’s qualification and at least one year of working experience according to their  qualification within the last two years.
  • A letter must be provided from the former employer, stating job position , experiences and even past companies the applicant has worked in.
  • Before a Kenyan is offered this visa, your employer should ensure that there is no Norwegian willing and available to take up this job.
  • If, during this period, the employer – Norway company cannot find a suitable candidate for the vacancy, the foreigner may then submit documents for the issue of a work permit in Norway.
  • Here are some requirements needed to work in a Norwegian company;
    • You must have all the right qualifications for the job.
    • You must be ready to show documents proving your country status and competency, e.g., educational certificates, practical training, diplomas, birth certificates, marriage certificate etc.
    • You must have proof of work experience.
  • A medical record showing your physical and mental health must be provided.
  • Details of work duration, titles and roles are also important.
  • The employer must make sure the foreigner has documents proving their qualifications (diplomas, certificates, etc.).

Norway Seasonal Worker Eligibility & Requirements

  • Seasonal work is work that can only be carried out during limited parts of the year due to climate variations, fluctuation in the availability of raw materials and other circumstances.
  • No formal education is required for seasonal work permit.
  • You must be above the age of 18 years before you can receive a seasonal work permit.
  • Applicants eligible for this visa are those working in the forestry, agriculture, the fish processing, plant nursery, restaurant, and tourism industries.
  • The permit must be consented by The Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV). This excludes seasonal workers within agriculture and forestry. 
  • If you are to replace an employee in connection with holidays, this must be clearly stated in your application.
  • If you have been given an offer of employment, a proof should be provided. 
  • The offer of employment must contain a job description and state the number of working hours per week, your hourly wage and the duration of the offer of employment
  • You can be granted a residence permit for seasonal work for up to three months.
  • Your family does not need residence permits to come live with you in Norway.
  • If you intend to change employers after your permit has been granted, you have to apply again.
  • Non-Kenyans applying for this visa are expected to have a copy of their stay permit in Kenya.
  • Minor’s traveling without their parents is required to have a notarized letter of consent signed by both their parents. The original copy of their birth certificate should also be presented during the visa application process.
  • Proof of payment of paid visa application fee should be made available during the visa application process.

Norway Specialist Eligibility & Requirements

  • Applicants of this visa intend to take up a specialist work in Norway.
  • Your annual salary must be specified on the UDI website.
  • Your employer must submit a tax certificate for value-added tax, and a declaration of compliance with statutory Norwegian health, safety, and the environmental requirements.
  • If you are to work in a profession subject to qualification requirements (a regulated profession), you must have been approved or authorized by the relevant specialist authority for your profession.
  • Kenyans who intend to work as a religious leader, teacher or an ethnic cook will not be granted the specialist visa.
  • A letter from your employer in Norway which confirms that you have been offered employment should be made available.
  • Proof of payment of visa application fee is required.
  • The visa fee is NOK 5,400.

Norway Au Pair Eligibility & Requirements

  • In order to be granted the Au pair, you must be above the age of 18 years and not have reached the age of 30.
  • A valid passport and Identity Card must be provided.
  • A contract between you and host family must be provided.
  • Applicants are not allowed to bring their kids.
  • Proof of insurance must be provided by applicants in case of any incident.
  • The Au Pair needs to contact the local police station in the district where the host family lives within 7 days off arrival. Your fingerprints and pictures taken for identification purposes. 
  • After visiting the police station the Au pair must visit the tax office to enroll for Social Security System.
  • A test for tuberculosis must be taken.
  • The host family can be a married couple, partners or cohabitants with or without children or a single parent with children.
  • The host family must have sound knowledge of Norwegian society and speak Norwegian with the Au pair.
  • The host family can only have one au pair at a time.
  • The au pair must be treated like a family member of the host.

Norway Skilled Worker Eligibility & Requirements

  • Applicants of this visa must have specialist training corresponding to upper secondary education level or hold a craft certificate.
  • You must have completed a degree or study programme. Examples include nurses, engineers, Bachelor or Master’s degree.
  • Kenyans must have gained expertise through a professional experience of a certain duration.
  • You may be granted a residence permit as a skilled worker.
  • Holders of this visa are required to have proof of payment of paid visa application fee.
  • If you are traveling with a child under the age of 18 years, the unabridged original copy of the child’s birth certificate should be provided.
  • A letter of employment from your employer is required.
  • You are expected to abide by the rules guiding your visa application.
