Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Portuguese Visa.

Portugal Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The Schengen tourist visa is for Kenyans visiting Portugal for sightseeing, adventures and vacations.
  • Portugal is part of the Schengen Area which is made up of 26 European countries, so a Schengen visa is required. 
  • Tourists are required to register with Portuguese Immigration Service within three days of entering Portugal. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in an administrative offense punishable with a fine from €60 to €160.
  • The currency used in Portugal is Euro.
  • The following documents are also required:
    • Two 35 mm x 45mm  passport-sized photos with white background.
    • Your original passport and copies of your previous visas.
    • Proof of travel insurance to cover you for the Schengen area.
    • Cover letter stating the purpose of your visit and itinerary that includes your activities, flight dates and times, entry and exit out of Portugal.
    • Accommodation plans for the duration of your stay. For example, hotel reservations.
    • Proof of sufficient funds to last the duration of your stay. For example, records of bank statements for the last three months.
  • Tourists and short-term visitors can drive in Portugal for up to six months using their foreign licence. The general speed limits are:
    • Built-up urban areas: 50km/h
    • Rural roads: 90km/h
    • Motorways: 120km/h
  • Consumption of drugs like heroin, cocaine and the others are not considered criminal.
  • Portugal is a safe country but you have to be careful because of petty crimes.
  • Tourists that are going hiking should be careful because of cliff erosion. 

Portugal Business Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa enables Kenyans to visit Portugal to engage in business activities.
  • While you are in the country with this visa, you can meet up with business partners for meetings and to negotiate and sign contracts.
  • You can attend trade fairs, conferences, and business summits while you are in the country.
  • Invitation letter from the company you will be visiting in Portugal should be provided. The address of the company and the dates of your visit should be stated in the letter.
  • If the company you are meeting with in Portugal will be responsible for your expenses while you are in the country, it should be stated in the letter.
  • A letter from your employer in Kenya stating awareness and allowance of your business travel for the duration of your time in the country.
  • If the applicant of this visa has been in business with this company before, proof of such events must be provided.
  • Certificate of business registration of your business partner in Portugal is required.
  • You cannot be gainfully employed while you are in the country with this visa.
  • Kenyans are expected to exit the country at the expiry of their visa.

Portugal Medical Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The Medical visa allows Kenyans to visit Portugal for medical treatment.
  • Portugal has a state-funded universal healthcare system offered to all.
  • Medical diagnosis from your local doctor. It should be accompanied by a document stating why the ailment is best treated in Portugal.
  • If you are planning to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days, you can ask for a certificate from your local council office. The certificate allows you to access Portugal’s public healthcare.
  • A medical attestation from the hospital or doctor in Portugal, confirming the date of appointment as well as your medical situation is required.
  • You are also required to provide proof of international health insurance when applying for your visa. The insurance must have a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. It must have a have an emergency medical evacuation and repatriation benefit.
  • If you are employed, a letter from your employer is required. Your employer should state in the letter that he is aware of your leave. Your position and how long you have been employed in the company should be clearly stated.
  • Proof of payment of medical fees should be provided. Medical insurance to cover the entire stay should be provided.
  • Minors must ensure they possess the original copy of their birth certificate. If they are traveling alone or with one of their parents, a document of consent which is signed by both parents of the minor should be provided.

Portugal Student Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The student visa type is for Kenyan students who have the intention of studying in a school in Portugal.
  • Before applicants can initiate the visa application process, they must have been accepted in one of the institutions in the country.
  • One 35 mm x 45 mm passport size photograph in color is required.
  • Documents confirming enrollment, stating type and length of courses to be taken in Portugal.
  • Confirmed Accommodation: from the inviting institution if on campus or confirmed hotel reservations, stating name, address and telephone number of the hotel, including confirmation number.
  • Higher education area adopted a system based on three cycles of study, at bachelor, master and doctorate's level, that is:
    • 1st cycle of study lasting three or four years to attain a bachelor's degree, in Portugal called a licenciatura.
    • 2nd cycle of study lasting one or two years to attain a master's degree, in Portugal called a mestrado.
    • 3rd cycle of study lasting three years to attain a doctorate, in Portugal called adoutoramento.
  • A residence permit will need to be applied for upon arriving in Portugal from the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF)
  • Letter of admission from the institution you have been accepted into is required. This is proof that you can attend lectures and write exams at school.
  • Certificates and transcripts of the schools you previously attended is a necessary document to be provided during the visa application process.
  • Proof that you can sufficiently finance your stay in Portugal must be provided. 
  • Students are required to have at least 38 Euros per day.
  • Foreign students are allowed to work part-time as long as it does not affect their studies in the country.
  • An extension to this visa can be granted to cover the duration of your program in the country.
  • If you are a minor traveling without your parent, a letter of consent signed both your parents should be provided. Also, an unabridged original copy of your birth certificate is required.

Portugal Official Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa allows government officials to visit the country to improve the relationship between the government of Kenya and Portugal.
  • Diplomatic note from the Kenyan government is required. The note should contain your position in government, duration, and purpose of your visit to the country.
  • A copy of the original invitation letter should be provided.
  • Applicants of this visa are Heads of State, Consular officers, ministers, and African Union representatives.
  • Asides Head of States, if your purpose of visiting the country is non-official, this visa will not be issued to you.
  • If you are traveling with a minor, the original copy of the minor’s birth certificate should be presented during the visa application process.
  • You can attend conferences and meetings while you are in the country.
  • Holders of this visa are not allowed to take up a course of study in the country.
  • Diplomats cannot receive payment for the services they render in the country.
  • A valid means of identification of the applicant is mandatory.

Portugal Transit Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The transit visa allows Kenyans to stay in Portugal for a short period of time.
  • This visa also enables foreigners to transit through Portugal to their destination country.
  • You are required to possess the visa and flight ticket of your destination country.
  • If you are under the age of 18 years, the unabridged original copy of your birth certificate should be provided.
  • Foreigners who have been previously convicted may not be issued this visa.
  • Receipt of paid visa application fee is required.
  • You are not allowed to study or take up paid or unpaid employment during your time in the country.
  • The visa is valid for 5 days.
  • You are required to exit the country before the expiry of your visa.
  • This visa cannot be extended.
