Documents Malawian applicants need to provide.
- Original Malawi passport that is valid for at least 6 months and has at least 3 empty pages.
- The signed application form that is correctly filled is required.
- No column of the visa form should be left blank or incomplete.
- The application form should be filled with a black or blue pen.
- Applications filled out with pencils will not be accepted.
- Two recently taken passport photograph in color with white background is required.
- The passport photographs should be taken within the last three months.
- Black and white photos and photos printed on paper will not be accepted.
- Proof of sufficient funds for the duration of stay.
- A confirmed return/onward ticket is required.
- All documents should be submitted at the embassy of Portugal.
- Applicants should provide vaccination against yellow fever certificates.
- Vaccination against typhoid is also required.

Tourist visa
- Passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended length of stay in Portugal.
- Application form should be correctly filled, signed and stamped.
- Bank statement showing proof of enough funds throughout the stay in Portugal.
- Letter of invitation from the host in Portugal introducing the applicant and the purpose of travel to Portugal.
- The letter must also state the place of stay, duration of stay, and information of host in Portugal.
- The host is required to provide a copy of Portugal's passport or ID card.
- The letter of invitation, as well as the Portugal passport and ID card, must be notarized by a Government officer in Portugal.
- The applicant must provide an invitation letter from a tour operator in Portugal if the applicant’s purpose of the visit is trekking or mountaineering.
- The tour operator’s registration letter must be approved by the Ministry of Tourism in Portugal.
- A computer-generated flight itinerary or a copy of flight tickets is required.
Business visa
- A business visa is granted to visitors who want to visit Portugal for business purposes.
- Copy of original Malawi passport and validity must be over 6 months.
- Proof of income/bank statements showing proof of sufficient funds while in Portugal is required.
- Duly signed application form that is correctly filled.
- 2 identical passport photographs with a white background and must be taken within the last three months.
- Letter of invitation from sponsor in Portugal explaining the relationship to the applicant and purpose of the visit is required.
- The letter must also include the details of the kind of business to be conducted in Portugal.
- The letter must also include the duration of stay, place of stay, and contact information of Host Company.
- The letter of employment from home company showing proof that the applicant is an employee of the company and in good standing is required.
- The letter must also indicate that leave has been granted and should also include dates revealing the beginning and end of leave.
- Non-Government Organization should submit proof of registration in Malawi and registration with the Government of Portugal.
- NGOs are also required to provide documents that include the name of the project to be carried out in Portugal and proof of financial responsibility.
