Basic Travel Requirements for Nigerians visiting Denmark

Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Danish Visa.

  • Passport with a validity of more than 3 months from the intended period of exiting the country. The passport should have at least two blank pages for the necessary stamp. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years.
  • Duly completed visa application form signed by the applicant.
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs with a white background. The photo should measure 35mm x 45mm and the distance from your chin to the top of your head must measure 30mm x 36mm.
  • Sufficient means to cover the duration of your stay in Denmark. The standard is for all foreigners to have up to 350 DKK per day for the duration of their stay. Foreigners who will be staying in a private home with the host covering all their costs will need a smaller amount. Those staying in a hotel should be in possession of 500 DKK per day.
  • Travel insurance which has sufficient medical coverage. The insurance must have the same validity as the visa and must be valid for all Schengen countries. The validity of your visa may be reduced if the insurance is not valid for the duration of your intended stay in Denmark. 
  • Proof of accommodation for the period you will be staying in the country.
  • Copy of return flight ticket.

Denmark is ranked as the eleventh most developed country in the world. The country is said to be one of the countries with the lowest level of corruption and has one of the world’s highest per capita income. 

Drug use is illegal in Denmark. Anyone found in the possession of illegal drugs will receive a fine and a heavy prison sentence.

General Requirements for Denmark Visa

Denmark Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • Applicants of this visa have the intention of visiting Denmark for the purpose of leisure and tourism for a short period of time.
  • Nigerians are who show suspicion of not wanting to return to their home country after this visa expires will not be granted this visa. You are therefore required to provide proof of strong ties to Nigeria.
  • Foreigners who have been invited to the country by their friends or relatives are eligible to apply for this visa. In most cases, your host must be a citizen or legal resident in Denmark and he/she must possess a permanent place to live in Denmark.
  • You are expected to leave Denmark on or before this visa expires. Overstaying the duration of your visa or attempting to use this visa to obtain a long-term residence will result in you being handed a penalty period of between 3 - 5 years.
  • Nigerians who will be entering Denmark any other countries in the Schengen area regularly are eligible to apply for a long-term visa that is valid for multiple entries.
  • During your time in Denmark on this visa, you are not allowed to work. You can only work if the Immigration Service of Denmark has granted you the right to do so.
  • It is recommended that the paper or online form provided by the Immigration Service is filled by the applicant’s host in the country.
  • Applicants of this visa are required to an invitation letter from their host in Denmark. The letter should be in the form of a printed invitation or an invitation ID.
  • Foreigners with incomplete information or document during the visa application may not be granted this visa.
  • All applicants of this visa are required to appear in person when submitting their visa application. The application can be submitted in your country of origin or in another country if you reside there legally.
  • After your application has been submitted you may also need to record your fingerprints.

Denmark Business Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa is issued to foreigners who are traveling to Denmark with the intention of engaging in business activities for a short period of time.
  • Before your visit to Denmark is considered a business visit, there must have been a commercial relationship between the inviting in Denmark and the sending company in Nigeria. The relationship between both companies must have been established before your arrival in Denmark.
  • The company or organization you will be visiting in Denmark must be registered in the Central Business Register (CVR).
  • An invitation form or an invitation ID from the Danish company which confirms the applicant’s business visit to Denmark should be provided. The Immigration Service will send a questionnaire to the Danish company if the application is missing an invitation form or ID.
  • Foreign trainees who will be receiving pay in Denmark, or foreigners who are working for the subsidiary of the Danish company, or who want to work for the company that has invited them will not be granted this visa.
  • If you have been registered as an undesirable in the Schengen Information System (SIS II) or have been previously deported from Denmark, you will not be granted this visa.
  • This visa type allows you to stay in Denmark for 90 days within a 180-day period and must be valid for all countries in the Schengen area. If you stay longer than the duration of your visa, you will be given a penalty period of 3 - 5 years.
  • It is recommended by the Immigration Service in Denmark that the inviting company in Denmark fills the invitation form provided.
  • If there are two applicant’s visiting one company, a document explaining each role of the applicant during the business visit in Denmark should be provided.
  • You may submit the application in your country of origin or in another country if you hold a legal residence there.

Denmark Cultural Visit Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa is issued to foreign nationals who have the intention of visiting Denmark for a short period of time usually 90 days in order to participate in a cultural, sporting or scientific event.
  • Athletes who have the intention of taking part in a sporting event in Denmark are required to provide a document providing a connection to the sport they will be participating in.
  • If there is a suspicion that there is a high-risk of you taking up permanent residence in Denmark or in another country in the Schengen area, you will not be granted this visa.
  • Companies or organizations who have the intention of hosting a large international event should ensure they help participants who require a visa.
  • This visa is valid for 90 days within a 180-day period. If you stay longer than the duration allowed by the visa, you will be given a penalty period of 3 - 5 years.
  • You are not allowed to work in the country on this visa without the permission of the Danish Immigration Service.
  • The invitation form provided by the Immigration Service in Denmark should be filled by the inviting host/organization. 
  • Your application is likely to be rejected if you fail to submit fingerprints and if you refuse to pay the application processing fee. 
  • After submitting the visa application, you are required to record your fingerprints.

Denmark Invitation Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa is issued to foreign nationals who have received an invitation from a host residing in Denmark.
  • It is expected that the host fills out the invitation and the visa applicant submits the invitation ID or the filled out printed invitation form with other documents during the visa application. If this is done accordingly, there will be a reduction in the processing time of this visa, obtaining additional information from your host becomes irrelevant.
  • If you have been invited to Denmark by a company with prior approval and you submit the visa application at a Danish diplomatic mission, it will be of immense advantage to the company make use of the online invitation VF2. In order to use the online invitation, you require a NemID employee certificate. NemID is a secure login that can be used if you are doing your online banking or finding out information from authorities.
  • If the reason for visiting Denmark is for a business visit and the company you are visiting in Denmark has no prior approval, it is recommended that the online invitation VU1 be used. Those visiting Denmark for a cultural visit should ensure they use the printable VU3 invitation.
  • The online VU2 invitation form should be filled if you are a friend or family member of your host in Denmark. For this to be relevant, the visa applicant must have submitted his/her application at a Danish diplomatic mission. A NemID is needed to fill the invitation. If the applicant submits his/her application at a diplomatic mission representing Denmark in his/her country of residence, then, only the printable invitation form can be used.
  • Your host in Denmark should ensure he/she does not forget to forward the invitation ID generated after filling out the invitation form. The invitation ID must be stated at the Danish diplomatic mission to complete the visa application. If you are not submitting your visa application at the Danish diplomatic mission but at a representative of the Danish diplomatic mission, then a copy of the completed invitation by the host should be submitted.
  • The online invitation has a validity of 6 months from the time it was submitted.
  • Hosts who are using the online invitation form can include more than one person in the same form. For those using the paper invitation, the invitation must be filled out for each person to be invited.
  • Any information about the host filled in the invitation form will be shared to the relevant authorities of the Schengen member states for the processing of the visa.

Denmark Higher Education Programmes Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa is issued foreigners who have been accepted into a higher education programme in Denmark. Foreigners will be issued a permit to stay and study while they are in Denmark.
  • This visa allows you to either participate in and complete a full-time educational programme or do part of your programme as a guest or exchange student.
  • Before this visa is granted, the applicant must have been admitted to a programme of higher education at an accredited educational institution n Denmark. You must also have a reasonable understanding of Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, English or German.
  • This visa can also be issued to foreigners who have been admitted to a preparatory course for a higher educational programme lasting form more than 3 months but not exceeding 1 year.
  • It must have been determined by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science that attendance is a necessary condition for admission to the specific higher educational programme.
  • Applicants of this visa must be able to provide that they have enough funds to cater for themselves for the duration of their programme. Applicants are expected to be in possession of up to DKK 6,166 per month. This amount should be multiplied by the total number of months they will be studying in a higher education programme in Denmark.
  • If the institution you will be studying the higher education programme requires you to pay a tuition fee and you have already done so, this can be seen as proof that you have sufficient means to cater for your self in Denmark. No additional documentation will be required.
  • Foreigners applying for this visa will be granted a residence permit which permits them to live and study in Denmark for the period of validity of the permit. Foreign nationals are not allowed to give up their Danish address or stay outside Denmark for 6 consecutive months, otherwise, they run a risk of losing their right to stay in Denmark. If you require to stay away from Denmark for a long period of time, you are advised to apply for a dispensation to avoid your permit from being obsolete.
  • A limited work permit will be granted to students which permits them to work for up to 20 hours every week during when their institution is in session from September to May and full-time during vacation (through June, July, and August). If you expect to complete a full educational programme in Denmark, the limited work permit is also valid during the 6-month job seeking period. A fine will be handed out to you or your residence permit will be revoked if you exceed the allocated number of hours to work.
  • Students who are studying in a programme with a compulsory internship will be automatically granted a permit to work full-time for the duration of the internship. The internship must be a prerequisite for graduation and the place of the internship must be approved by your educational institution.
  • Foreigners in Denmark are not entitled to public benefits, such as those under the terms of the Active Social Policy Act, state study grants, and housing benefits. Your permit will be invalidated if you receive these benefits.
  • If you have a Danish residence permit, you qualify for the partly user paid Danish lessons. To enjoy this benefit, you must not be less than 18 years and your Danish address must be registered in the Danish National Register.
  • The validity of your visa covers the duration of your educational programme, as long as you are actively involved in the programme. An extension to the residence permit can be granted in the case you do not complete your study programme within the nominal period of study. The permit can be extended for one year only and cannot be extended further except in the case where the duration of the study was extended as a result of pregnancy or parental leave. The application for extension of the study permit must be lodged not earlier than 3 months before it expires.
  • The validity of your residence permit will be shortened if the validity of your passport is shorter than the possible period of stay. However, you can apply for an extension to the duration of the residence permit after your passport has been renewed.
  • Spouse, registered or cohabiting partner and children who are under the age of 18 years of applicants of a residence and work permit based on study can accompany them to Denmark.
  • You are expected to attach the receipt for your payment of the visa application fee with other documents to be submitted during the visa application.

Denmark Basic And Youth Study Eligibility & Requirements

  • A residence permit can be granted to foreigners who have been accepted to a basic or youth study programme in Denmark. The residence permit granted allows you to study and stay in Denmark.
  • Foreigners must have been admitted to an approved basic or youth study programme before they are granted this visa. It is mandatory for the educational programme to be approved by a state authority. If the educational programme is yet to be approved but the institution offering the programme has been approved by a state authority, a statement from the Danish Evaluation Institute should be provided.
  • A residence permit for the high school programme valid for one year is issued only if your stay is arranged by a student exchange organization or you have started your high school programme in Nigeria and you want to do one year of your education in Denmark or you wish to start the high school programme in Denmark and complete it in Nigeria.
  • A residence permit cannot be granted if you want to enroll for a basic programme at a trade school.
  • If you are under the age of 18 years, a declaration of consent to allow you to study in Denmark signed by both your parents is required. The institution must also state that the applicant will be entitled to the right study and residence conditions in Denmark.
  • Foreign applicants of this visa will be granted a residence permit which allows them to live and study in Denmark for the period of validity of the permit. Foreign nationals are not allowed to give up their Danish address or stay outside Denmark for 6 consecutive months, otherwise, they run a risk of losing their right to stay in Denmark. If you require to stay away from Denmark for a long period of time, you are advised to apply for a dispensation to avoid your permit from being obsolete.
  • If you have a Danish residence permit, you qualify for the partly user paid Danish lessons. To enjoy this benefit, you must not be less than 18 years and your Danish address must be registered in the Danish National Register.

  • Students are not allowed to work at a basic or youth study programme. Working without a permit is considered illegal, you can receive a fine or be sent to prison and your residence permit will be withdrawn if you are caught doing so.
  • Your family cannot accompany you to Denmark as a student at a basic or youth study programme.
  • During the application for a residence permit, your biometric features must be recorded. Applicants whose biometric features are not recorded will not be granted a residence permit.

Denmark Folk High Schools Eligibility & Requirements

  • Foreigners who are enrolled in a course at a folk high school in Denmark are granted a permit for a folk high school stay.
  • It is a necessary requirement for all applicants to have enrolled for a course and have been admitted to study at an approved folk high school. The folk high school the applicant has been accepted to must be approved and monitored by the Danish Ministry of Culture. The course to be studied by the applicant must be eligible for state subsidies.
  • Applicants who are under the age of 18 years are required to provide a letter of consent signed by both their parents. The folk high school must also provide a document stating that the applicant will have adequate study and residence conditions in Denmark.
  • Foreign applicants of this visa will be granted a residence permit which allows them to live and study in Denmark for the period of validity of the permit. Foreign nationals are not allowed to give up their Danish address or stay outside Denmark for 6 consecutive months, otherwise, they run a risk of losing their right to stay in Denmark. If you require to stay away from Denmark for a long period of time, you are advised to apply for a dispensation to avoid your permit from being invalidated.
  • If you have a Danish residence permit, you qualify for the partly user paid Danish lessons. To enjoy this benefit, you must not be less than 18 years and your Danish address must be registered in the Danish National Register.

  • You are permitted to stay in Denmark for the duration of your stay at a folk high school, as long as you are actively involved in the programme. The total duration of your stay at a folk high school is 18 months, it can be at one folk high school or at multiple folk high schools. If you want to change your folk high school or change the course at which your residence permit was granted, you need to apply for another residence permit.
  • The residence permit can be valid until after three months before your passport expires. The duration of your residence permit will be shortened if the validity of your passport is shorter than the possible period of stay.
  • Family members are not permitted to accompany holders of a residence permit based on a stay at a folk high school in Denmark.
  • When you are applying for a residence permit, your biometric features must be recorded. The facial photo and your fingerprints which were recorded will be stored in a microchip embedded in the residence card.

Denmark PhD Studies Eligibility & Requirements

  • A Danish residence permit will be granted to foreigners are enrolled at a Danish university as a Ph.D. student and are receiving a salary from the university or a company associated with the Ph.D. programme. 
  • A residence permit is also granted to foreigners who are enrolled in a Ph.D. programme abroad and have the intention of doing a part of their programme in Denmark.
  • Applicants who enrolled in Ph.D. programmes on any of the flexible Ph.D. models must choose if they will be applying for a residence permit to complete a master’s degree and thereafter apply to complete the Ph.D. programme, or whether they want to apply for a residence permit valid for the duration of their education.
  • When you apply for a permit which is valid for the full duration of the study, you only need to pay the fee once, the disadvantage is that you cannot extend the permit for more than 2 years. In the first case of splitting the master’s and Ph.D. programme, you can extend the permit for a total of 3 years.
  • If you are doing a full degree in Denmark, you must have enrolled for a full-time Ph.D. degree in Denmark. If you want to do part of your programme in Denmark as a visiting student, you must have enrolled for a full-time Ph.D. programme abroad.
  • Applicants of a residence permit for Ph.D. studies must be able to speak and understand either Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, English or German reasonably well.
  • If you are a guest Ph.D. student in Denmark, you must not give up your Danish address or stay abroad for 6 consecutive months or you run the risk of losing your residence permit. If you are enrolled in a Ph.D. programme in Denmark, whether you are abroad for 6 consecutive months or you give up your Daish address, your residence permit will not lapse. 
  • You are allowed to work tasks that are part of your Ph.D. programme for the duration of your study at the university at which you have been enrolled. You can also take up extra work besides your full-time job for up to 20 hours per week when school is in session (from September to May) and full-time through June, July, and August. It is deemed illegal if your work exceeds the allocated period of time.
  • Foreigners who hold a residence permit for Ph.D. studies are not allowed to enjoy public benefits under the terms of the Active Social Policy Act. Violating this law can lead to your residence permit being withdrawn.
  • If you have a Danish residence permit, you qualify for the partly user paid Danish lessons. To enjoy this benefit, you must not be less than 18 years and your Danish address must be registered in the Danish National Register.
  • You are permitted to remain in Denmark for the standard duration of the study programme, as long as you are actively involved in the programme. An extension to the residence permit can be granted if you do not complete the study programme within the standard duration.
  • Students who are enrolled for a Ph.D. programme can be granted a 6-month residence permit to seek for a job in Denmark.
  • Spouse, registered or cohabiting partner and children who are under the age of 18 years of applicants of a residence and work permit based on study can accompany them to Denmark.
  • When you are applying for a residence permit, your biometric features must be recorded. The facial photo and your fingerprints which were recorded will be stored in a microchip embedded in the residence card.

Denmark Pay Limit Scheme Eligibility & Requirements

  • The Pay Limit Scheme is for those who have been offered a job with a high salary in Denmark. A residence and work permit can be applied for via the Pay limit Scheme. The job doesn’t have to be within a specific profession and you are not required to have a specific educational background. 
  • Foreigners who seek a residence permit based on the Pay Limit Scheme are required to have a job with a yearly income of DKK 426,985.06. If your income for the job you have been offered is less than the figure stated, you will not be granted a permit based on the Pay Limit Scheme. Even if you are to take a holiday without pay, your yearly salary still has to amount to DKK 426,985.06. Applicants of this visa should note that the minimum pay limit amount is changed every year.
  • Your employer cannot pay you the Pay limit Scheme’s minimum amount in cash, the money has to be paid to a Danish bank account in a bank which is legally operating in Denmark. Your employer is to state in the visa application form that this requirement will be met.
  • The visa applicant’s salary up to and including the Pay Limit Scheme’s minimum amount must consist of basic salary, payments to labor market pension schemes, paid holiday allowance. If the holiday allowance earned for a particular year is to be paid in the next holiday year, then the holiday allowance cannot be added to the annual salary of that year but of the next year.
  • Salary above the Pay Limit Scheme’s minimum amount should not be necessarily paid into a Danish bank account. The total salary can consist of paid living and housing expenses, per diems, free use of a car, paid phone, paid internet, benefits-in-kind, subscriptions, and other services offered by the employer.
  • The salary and terms of employment of the job offered to the applicant must conform with the Danish standards. If in doubts, either you or your employer can contact the relevant trade union or employer’s association. You are required to work for up to 30 hours weekly.
  • For medical doctors and some other special cases, an authorization must be obtained from the Danish Patient Safety Authority.
  • In some cases, the work permit can expire before the residence permit. This occurs mostly when the applicant has been granted a permit to remain in Denmark during the period he/she seeks a job. During this job seeking period, the applicant is not allowed to work.
  • Foreigners must not give up their Danish address or stay in another country for 6 consecutive months. Doing this can result in the applicant losing his/her right to stay in Denmark. If it becomes compulsory that you have to stay in another country for a long time, you are advised to apply for a dispensation so as to prevent your permit from lapsing.
  • You are not allowed to enjoy public benefits which fall under the terms of the Active Social Policy. Your permit can be withdrawn if you are found to be illegally enjoying these benefits.
  • With this residence permit in Denmark, you are qualified for partly user paid Danish lessons. To qualify for this, you must not be less than 18 years of age and your Danish address must be registered in the Danish National Register.
  • If the duration of your employment will not exceed 4 years, the residence and work permit you will be granted will be valid for the duration of your employment. If you have the intention of working in Denmark after the period of validity of your residence and work permit, you must apply for an extension for the permit before the permit expires.
  • If the duration of your employment is for a period of 4 years or more, the permit you will be granted will only be valid for 4 years. If you are willing to keep working after the 4 years validity of this permit, you must apply for an extension to the permit before it expires.
  • Foreigners who lose their job should inform SIRI as soon as this happens. The residence and work permit you were granted will be withdrawn as it is based on the particular job you lost. If the reason for losing the job is no fault of your, you have the benefit of applying for an extra 6 months residence permit which will enable you to search for another job during this period. As soon as you get a job, you are required to apply for a new residence and work permit based on the new job.
  • You are required to submit a new application for a residence and work permit which contains information about your new employment if you change jobs. It is mandatory for the salary you will be receiving in your new place of employment to correspond to at least the pay limit.
  • Your spouse, cohabiting partner, and children under the age of 18 years can follow you to Denmark.
  • During the application for a residence permit, your biometric features must be captured. This will be stored in a microchip that will be embedded in the residence card.
  • To apply, follow the following steps; Create a case order ID, Pay the fee, Gather the necessary documentation, Complete the application form, Submit the application, Biometrics, and Wait for an answer.

Denmark The Positive List Eligibility & Requirements

  • The Positive List is a list of professions where there is a shortage of qualified professionals in Denmark. Foreigners who have been offered a job that is on the positive list are eligible to apply for a Danish residence and work permit based on the Positive List Scheme.
  • It is expected that you have an educational background which qualifies you for the job you have been offered. The Positive List is updated semi-annually, 1 January and 1 July.
  • The following are the professions that are listed on the Positive List; Administrative and Commercial Managers, Production and Specialized Services Managers, Hospitality, Retail and other Services Managers, Natural Science and Engineering, Healthcare, Teaching and Educational Work, Economics, Administration and Sales, Information and Communication Technology, Law, Social Science and Culture, Engineering work in science, engineering and ship and aviation, and Technicians and assistants in healthcare.
  • The salary you will be offered and the terms of employment are required to correspond with the Danish standards. A copy of the employment contract or job offer must be attached and submitted along with other necessary documents during the application process.
  • In some cases, foreigners are required to have a Danish authorization. e.g doctors.
  • Foreigners must not give up their Danish address or stay in another country for 6 consecutive months. Doing this can result in the applicant losing his/her right to stay in Denmark. If it becomes compulsory that you have to stay in another country for a long time, you are advised to apply for a dispensation so as to prevent your permit from lapsing.
  • You are not allowed to enjoy public benefits which fall under the terms of the Active Social Policy. Your permit can be withdrawn if you are found to be illegally enjoying these benefits.
  • With this residence and work permit in Denmark, you are qualified for partly user paid Danish lessons. To qualify for this, you must not be less than 18 years of age and your Danish address must be registered in the Danish National Register.
  • If the duration of your employment will not exceed 4 years, the residence and work permit you will be granted will be valid for the duration of your employment. If you have the intention of working in Denmark after the period of validity of your residence and work permit, you must apply for an extension for the permit before the permit expires.
  • If the duration of your employment is for a period of 4 years or more, the permit you will be granted will only be valid for 4 years. If you are willing to keep working after the 4 years validity of this permit, you must apply for an extension to the permit before it expires.

Denmark Special Individual Qualification Eligibility & Requirements

  • This residence and work permit based on special individual qualifications is issued to foreigners who have been offered a job so closely linked to them that only them can carry out e.g performers or artists, including singers, musicians and conductors, professional athletes or coaches, and specialized chefs.
  • If you are a performer or an artist, you will be granted a residence and work permit based on special individual qualifications if there are specific artistic reasons that you are the actual person needed to perform the certain role in connection with the artistic production. For example, you must have won a seat in an orchestra as part of a competition or you must have been chosen to dance ballet in a large show or you must be offered employment in a circus or an amusement park. You will be allowed to work without a work permit if you are of great importance to a significant artistic event. You must not stay in Denmark for longer than 3 months.
  • If you are an athlete or coach, there must be specific athletic reasons that the job must be carried out by you. Employment as a professional athlete or coach must be the major reason for the occupation and not a side employment. Athletes and coaches must be offered full-time employment for up to 37 hours per week.
  • The governing body of sports must issue a statement which confirms that there are specific athletic reasons that the job as an athlete or coach must be carried out by you.
  • Specialized chefs must possess individual qualifications necessary to carry out the job they have been offered. You must have been educated and trained as a specialized chef and you must have vast experience with the cuisine that you will work in.
  • The salary you will be offered and the terms of employment are required to correspond with the Danish standards. A copy of the employment contract or job offer must be attached and submitted along with other necessary documents during the application process.
  • Foreigners must not give up their Danish address or stay in another country for 6 consecutive months. Doing this can result in the applicant losing his/her right to stay in Denmark. If it becomes compulsory that you have to stay in another country for a long time, you are advised to apply for a dispensation so as to prevent your permit from lapsing.

  • Foreigners who have completed a master’s degree or Ph.D. degree in Denmark can apply for an establishment card. If you have completed a master’s degree and have been issued an establishment card and afterward complete a Ph.D. degree, you can apply for an establishment card after completing the Ph.D. degree.
  • Your educational level is considered to be the equivalent of a Ph.D. degree if you have completed an advanced programme from the Danish Academies of Music. During the application for an establishment card, you must provide documents which prove that you have completed a master’s degree or a Ph.D. degree. This document could be in the form of your diploma. If by the time of your application for the establishment card you have earned your master’s or a Ph.D. degree but you have not received your diploma, official documentation from the institution you earned your master’s or Ph.D. degree should be provided.
  • You are expected to apply for the establishment card before the 6-month job seeking period expires.
  • It is a necessary requirement that all applicants of the residence card have sufficient means to cater for themselves during the first year of their stay. Applicants in Denmark without any family are required to have DKK 88,356, if you will be accompanied by a spouse, you are required to have DKK 176,712, if your spouse and any children will be accompanying you, you are required to have DKK 262,476, and if you will be accompanied by any of your children but not your spouse, you are required to have DKK 174,120.

  • Foreigners who have been offered a paid position as a researcher can apply for a residence and work permit based on this scheme in Denmark. Separate regulations apply to guest researchers and Ph.D. students.
  • Before you are granted a permit as a researcher, there must be reasons relating to research for offering you the position as a researcher.
  • The salary you will be offered and the terms of employment are required to correspond with the Danish standards. A copy of the employment contract or job offer must be attached and submitted along with other necessary documents during the application process.
  • Researchers, scientists or speakers who have been invited to teach in Denmark for a short period of time of less than 90 days do not need to apply for a residence and work permit. The same applies to researchers going to work at a university or company in Denmark. If you have prior knowledge that your stay in Denmark will exceed 90 days, you are required to apply for a residence permit which will be valid for the first 90 days of your visit.
  • If in your employment contract, it has been stated that as a researcher, you will need to do external examinations, it is not necessary for you to apply for a separate work permit.
  • As a researcher, you are permitted to change your job position while maintaining the same university or company. For instance, you can get promoted or your research project can be changed without having to apply for a new residence and work permit. If there is a promotion or change in the research project, the salary and terms of employment must still be of Danish standards.
  • You are allowed to stay in Denmark for the duration of time your residence and work permit as a researcher is valid. The permit also allows you access to other Schengen member countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, but you are not allowed to work in other Schengen countries.
  • The residence and work permit as a researcher is exempt from the rules on lapsing. Holders of this permit are allowed to give up their Danish address or reside abroad for 6 consecutive months. If you are not being paid the salary stated during your application for the residence and work permit during the period you are residing abroad, your employer must provide documents confirming that you were abroad for the period where you were not being paid. Documents which show proof of your residence abroad include; Deregistration from the CPR registry, Boarding pass, Stamps in your passport, Information from the company’s HR, and Documentation of salary received abroad.
  • You and your family members are not entitled to benefits under the terms of the Active Social Policy Act. You run the risk of your residence and work permit being withdrawn if you are found to be enjoying these benefits illegally.
  • Foreigners staying in Denmark on this residence and work permit qualify for partial user paid Danish lessons. To fully qualify for this, you must be 18 years or older and your Danish address must be registered in the Danish National Register.
  • If the duration of your employment exceeds 4 years, you will be granted a permit for 4 years. If you are willing to continue working after the allocated 4 years, you must apply for an extension of your residence and work permit based on how long your employment has been extended. You are required to apply for an extension before the permit expires.
  • If you have been offered employment which lasts for less than 4 years, you will be granted a residence and work permit based on the duration of the employment contract. You are required to apply for an extension of your residence and work permit if your employment contract is extended.
  • SIRI must be notified immediately if you lose your job, the residence and work permit you had will be withdrawn as it was based on the exact job you had. If the reason for you losing your job was as a result of cutbacks and of no particular fault of yours, you are allowed to apply for a 6-month residence permit which allows you to find another job in Denmark.
  • A new application for a residence and work permit must be lodged with information on the new employment if you find a new job in Denmark. Once you apply, you are allowed to start working at your new place of employment even if you have not been granted a new permit by SIRI.

Denmark Herdsman And Farm Manager Eligibility & Requirements

  • The residence and work permit is granted to those who have been employed as herdsmen or farm managers in agriculture. This permit cannot be granted to farm workers or mink farmhands. Foreigners who are managers within horticulture and forestry can also not be granted this permit.
  • The salary you will be paid and the terms of employment offered to you must follow the normal Danish standards. There should be no shortages in your salary, holiday entitlements, terms of notice, etc., when compared to standards within the field you will be working. During the application for this residence and work permit, a copy of your employment contract must be attached to other documents to be submitted.
  • There are indicative wage levels for herdsmen and farmers which are determined on the basis of Regional Labour Market Councils (RAR). The wage levels are; Herdsmen: DKK 26,918 exclusive of pension/ DKK 29,250 inclusive of pension, Farm Managers: DKK 28,759 exclusive of pension/ DKK 31,250 inclusive of pension, Remuneration of overtime: DKK 186.35 per hour for the first 2 hours and DKK 255.26 for the following hours plus Sundays and public holidays or time off in the ratio 1:1:3 for the first 2 hours and 1:1:8 for the following hours plus Sundays and public holidays.
  • The residence and work permit you will be granted allows you to stay in Denmark for the validity of the permit, but you are not allowed to give up your Danish address or reside outside Denmark for up to 6 consecutive months. If it becomes necessary for you to stay outside Denmark for up to 6 consecutive months, you can apply for a dispensation.

  • A guest researcher is someone who has the intention of conducting research at a Danish research institute or a Danish company who make their facilities available to you to make use of. While you are conducting your research in Denmark, you are not permitted to be employed.
  • Guest researchers must have received a Master’s degree. If you have a Master’s degree and you have received an invitation from a Danish research institute to conduct research as part of going forward in your education or career, you are eligible to apply for a residence permit as a guest researcher.
  • A research institution or company may host foreigners by sending out an invite to them and making sure the facilities are at the foreigners’ disposal.
  • Foreigners who are guest researchers in Denmark can be accompanied by the spouse, cohabiting partner, and their children under the age of 18 years. You must be able to cater for yourself and your relatives through funds of our own or through salary being paid to you by your employer in your home country.
  • For each month of your stay in Denmark, you must provide proof that you are capable of affording DKK 11,423 if you are without a family, DKK 22,846 if you are in Denmark with your spouse, DKK 26,603 if you are in Denmark with your spouse and one or more children, and DKK 15,180 if you are in the country with one or more children but not your spouse.
