Basic Travel Requirements for Nigerians visiting Malawi

Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Malawian Visa.

  • A valid passport.

The plethora of activities available for tourists to engage in makes the country one of the best places to visit in Africa. The enormous Lake Malawi is a popular destination for watersports, diving, snorkeling, and kayaking. The country also has national parks and game reserves where tourists can visit to watch the vast array of wildlife in the country. Wildlife animals which can be seen in the various game reserves include lions, zebras, leopards, elephants, and sea eagles. Zomba Plateau and the 3,002-tall Mount Mulanje, the highest peak in the country, are ideal trekking destinations for tourists.
 
The tourism industry in Malawi suffered a setback in the 1980s as a result of the economic recession suffered by South Africa, where most tourists come from, and the destabilization of Zimbabwe. In recent years, there has been an upturn in fortunes, the number of tourists’ visits have been on the rise. The tourism industry contributed 4.5% of the national GDP and 3.8% of the labor force.
 
Buying, selling, killing, or capturing of any protected wild animal or trading its parts without a license is considered a great offense. Anyone caught breaking this rule will be severely punished. Homosexuality is illegal in Malawi; foreigners should completely desist from such acts.
 
Citizens of Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Namibia, Saint Lucia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Tuvalu, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe can visit Malawi for up to 90 days without a visa.

Malawi Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • This is the type of visa issued to Nigerians intending to visit Malawi for tourism purposes.
  • You can also visit family and friends while on this visa.
  • All visitors to Malawi must carry a valid passport.
  •  Visa applicants intending to visit a friend or family need to submit an invitation letter from a family member or host living in Malawi.
  • This letter should clearly state the address and contact details of the host, as well as your relationship with them.
  •  During the visa application, you will need to provide proof of sufficient funds to last the duration of your stay.
  • You are advised to exit the country before your visa expires and present documents that show you have the intention to do so.
  • This visa does not serve study purposes. You cannot be enrolled in any of the institutions of learning in the country.

Malawi Business Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • This is the type of visa issued to Nigerians traveling to Malawi for business purposes.
  • You will need to provide an invitation letter from the Malawian company you will be visiting.
  • This letter will also contain their detailed address, accompanied with the date and actual purpose of your trip.
  • If the intention is to attend a meeting or seminar, confirmation/invitation from the conference organizer/institution is required.
  • Pre-registration is recommended for business travelers who will be attending conferences in the country. Proof of this registration is required.
  • If you are employed, you will have to present a certificate from your employer stating or allowing your business travel.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover the costs of stay (e.g. bank statement for 2 recent months) is required.
  • Self-employed people may need to submit proof of business registration.
  • You cannot be gainfully employed while you are in the country with this visa.
  • It must be made clear whether your trip will be sponsored by the employer or the local company.
  • Proof of payment of visa application fee should be submitted.
