Basic Travel Requirements for Nigerians visiting Mexico

Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Mexican Visa.

  • A Nigerian passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended arrival date and must have 2 blank pages for visa stamp.
  • Credit/debit card or PayPal account for payment.
  • Duly completed and signed visa application form.
  • If the applicant is a minor, the parents/legal guardians have to sign the form.
  • Passport-size photographs (2 x 2” in dimension) taken in white background.
  • Travel document.
  • Proof of financial support.
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Copy of return flight ticket with e-Ticket Number
  • Documentation showing applicant’s ties to home country, e.g. verification from applicant’s employer.
  • A police report showing the traveler does not have a criminal record.
  • Medical Insurance.
  • Documentation confirming the purpose of travel.
  • Copy of travel itinerary.
  • If staying with a friend/relative, you must provide a cover letter which includes the address and ID of the person.

Facts about Mexico

Mexico is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. The country is known for its beaches, culture and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There are a plethora of beaches in the country with the most popular being the resort town of Cancun. University students during their spring break make the resort their top destination during this period. Other beaches include the beach in Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas, Mazunte, etc. Activities to be carried out on the beaches in Mexico include surfing, snorkeling, cliff diving, and fishing.
 
Tourism in Mexico is the third-largest source of income for Mexico. The country is one of the most visited countries in the world and the second-most visited countries in the Americas. In 2017, the number of visitors in Mexico was close to 40 million which was up 12 percent from 2016. It has been estimated that the number is going to increase at a rate of about 4.2 million per year.
 
Foreigners visiting Mexico will not be allowed entry into or exit from Mexico with more than $10,000 or its equivalent in any currency. Punishment for drug-related crimes are very severe and those who are caught engaging in any of these offenses will be jailed for a long period of time.

Mexico Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The tourist visa is issued to people who wish to visit Mexico for tourism or leisure. Those who wish to visit friends and family members residing in Mexico will also need this visa.
  • An invitation letter from the friend or relative you are paying a visit to should be provided. The letter should have the valid home address and telephone number of your host.
  • While on a tourist visa, you may attend Mexican festivals and events. Applicants are required to present a letter from their current employer stating an awareness of leave. This letter will also serve to confirm that the applicant has the intentions of returning to his home country.
  • Your position in the company, the term of your employment, and the duration of your leave should be stated in the letter.
  • Mexico offers visa exemption to many nationalities — basically anybody with a valid visa from the US, UK, Canada or the Schengen area.
  • You must fill a Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) card before you enter Immigration and Customs at your port of entry. Normally, an FMM card will be given to you on your inbound flight.
  • At your first port of entry in Mexico, you have to go through the Customs and Immigration. You will be asked about your purpose of travel, whether it’s your first time in Mexico, etc.
  • Depending on how you answer these questions, your passport will be stamped.
  • The number of days you will be allowed to stay will be marked on the FMM card. Usually, it would be 180 days.
  • You must retain the FMM card while you are in Mexico. If you lose, you have to pay a penalty on your exit.
  • You have to return the FMM card to the airline staff on your exit. If you lose your FMM card, you must pay a penalty.
  • To avoid any penalties and delays on your exit, make sure to keep the FMM card safe while you are in the country.

Mexico Business Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • Nigerians travelling to Mexico for business will have to secure a business visa first.
  • Business travelers are permitted to attend conferences, trade fairs, and business summits while they are in Mexico.
  • A signed official letter from your employer confirming that you are undertaking this business trip on the company’s behalf is needed.
  • The purpose and dates of the trip will also be outlined in the letter.
  • If a number of trips are required/envisaged, this must be clearly stated in the letter.
  • If going for a business meeting, the Mexican company you’d be meeting may also provide a letter confirming the trip.
  • If you are responsible for the costs of the trip, evidence of how you intend to finance your trip and support yourself for the duration of your visit must be provided.
  • Certificate of business registration of the Mexican company you’d be visiting may be required.
  • Mexico visa cannot be applied by mail. You must physically appear at the embassy for your application. 
  • As always, carry a copy of your return ticket and hotel or hostel booking just in case.
  • Mexico visa costs about $32 and takes only two days for processing, in most cases. Depending on the country and embassy involved, processing time could go up to 8 weeks so applicants are advised to always submit their applications well in advance.
  • The visa fee can be paid in cash in most embassies. Some embassies accept only money orders. You should check with your nearest embassy for information about how they accept payments.
  • The normal validity of the Mexican business visa is 180 days.
  • If you are under the age of 18, the unabridged original copy of your birth certificate should be made available.
  • Also, a letter of consent signed by both your parents is required if you will be traveling without your parents.
  • A document which shows that you have the incentive of returning to your country at the expiry of your visa should be submitted during the visa application process.
  • You must provide proof of your financial ability so as to support yourself financially during your stay in Mexico and for your return transportation.
  • Mexico requires visitors to have USD 50 per day for staying in Mexico.
  • You will have to provide your recent colour photograph for the visa application. Make sure that your photograph matches or corresponds to all the specifications required for visa photographs.
  • In any case, your photograph must not be more than 6 months old. You will need to submit two copies of your passport photograph along with your visa application form.

Mexico Student Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • Mexico has some of the most prestigious universities around the world that are globally recognized for providing high quality education.
  • For foreign students to attend these schools, a student visa is a must.
  • Applicants of this visa must ensure they have been offered admission into the school they applied for before applying for the visa.
  • The original admission letter written on the school’s letterhead should be provided.
  • This proves that you have been offered admission into the school and you can attend classes.
  • Certificates and transcripts gotten from previously attended schools should also be submitted during the visa application process.
  • Proof that you have paid the tuition fee for your programme of study should be provided.
  • International students are permitted to work part-time for 20 hours per week when school is in session and full-time when the school is on break.
  • If you are a minor, the original copy of your birth certificate should be made available.
  • Also, a notarized letter of consent signed by both your parents should be provided.
  • An extension to this visa can be granted to cover the duration of your study program in the country.
  • While tourist visas are valid for 6 months, the validity of the student visa is one year.
  • The following documents are required for such citizens:
    • Complete National Visa Application Form
    • 6 front-view and 5 profile photographs, 2"x2", with a white background.
    • A valid passport.
  • Candidates need to present the enrollment or letter of acceptance from the institution they plan to attend, determining level, grade, duration of the planned studies, and field of study.
  • Applicants need to show proof of their economic solvency and periodic and uninterrupted receipt of the sum of US$ 300.00 monthly, for the living expenses, during the study period.
  •  In case an applicant has been granted a scholarship for the study program, he/she needs to show appropriate documentation regarding it.
  • International students are required to show proof of medical/accidental insurance with international coverage. They can present written confirmation from insurance company of valid health/accidental insurance with full international coverage.
  • Medical statement showing good health and indicating that the candidate is free from any of illnesses is also required.
  • If the applicant is a minor or below 18 years of age, he has to present a notarized authorization from both parents and a copy of his/her birth certificate showing parents names.
  • Generally, visa can be issued in an average of 2 days or can take up to 3 weeks, depending on nationality of the applicant.
  • Cost of issuing a visa varies depending on nationality. It can be anywhere in between US$30 – $50.
  • Student visas are generally valid for one year, whereas tourist visas and cards are valid for up to 6 months.
  • Students, who are enrolling for course duration of six months or less, should obtain a tourist card instead of student visa.
