Facts about Slovakia

Slovakia is a landlocked country in Central Europe with over 5 million residents. It shares borders in the north with Poland, Ukraine to the east, the Czech Republic to the west, Hungary to the south, and Austria to the southwest.

Slovakia has the highest number of castles and chateaux per capita in the world. One of the most famous is the Spiš Castle, which is part of the UNESCO List of World’s Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Slovakia is a member of the European Union and Schengen system, thus it can issue a Schengen visa.

Driving under the influence of alcohol is illegal in Slovakia and will land you in jail, the alcohol tolerance level is zero per cent. Avoid getting involved in drugs in any way, the penalty for drug-related offences are very severe.

Slovakia Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • A tourist visa is for individuals travelling with the aim of recreation, leisure or tourism.
  • Slovakia tourist visa is valid for 90 days.
  • This visa is also issued to those who want to visiting friends or relatives. In this case, the Slovakian host will have to send an invitation letter.
  • All tourist and transit visa applications are to be submitted at the Swedish embassy in Abuja. This change was effected by 15/04/2014.
  • Medical insurance having a coverage of at least 30,000 EUR is required. This insurance should be valid for the duration of your trip.
  • It is necessary to have a return flight reservation proof even if it is temporary. This will prove that the applicant has the incentive of returning to home country at the expiration of the visa.
  • Without a place to stay in Slovakia, a visa will not be issued. If you will be staying in a hotel, do not use reservations that could be canceled before the visa application process is complete.
  • A recent bank statement, not older than three months should be submitted. This will let the Consul know that you will be able to cater for yourself during your stay in Slovakia.
  • Since 01/12/2008, extension of visas have been possible in rare cases. The visa could be extended for a period of 90 days.
  • Tourism and visits do not justify visa extension as such, you are to exit Slovak republic upon expiration of your visa.

Slovakia Business Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa is for the purpose of conducting business, attending a conference or training.
  • Holders of this visa are not allowed to take up any form of employment or engage in manual labor.
  • It allows a maximum stay of 90 days in 6 months after which you must return to Nigeria.
  • A letter from the host company in Slovakia is required before you can apply for this visa.
  • The company must be a registered company and the letter should introduce the applicant, state the reason for the trip and who the sponsor of the trip would be.
  • A cover letter from your Nigerian employer is required. It should introduce the applicant and state that the applicant has permission to travel.
  • The cover letter should be printed on the company’s letterhead and signed.
  • Self-employed applicants should submit an incorporation letter and proof of up-to-date income tax returns (ITR).
  • Pension allowance slip should be presented for retired applicants.
  • Applicants who want to work must acquire a Slovak work permit. It is granted when the limit for season work is a maximum of 180 days per year.
  • You will be deported for overstaying your visa regardless of how valid your reasons may be.

Slovakia Transit Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • Slovakia transit visa is issued for the purpose of passing through Slovakia to other countries.
  • Type A is the airport transit visa. This visa allows the individual to only pass through the international transit area and not enter other territories.
  • The type A transit visa is for brief stop-overs during the trip.
  • Type B is called the transit visa which entitles travelers from one non-schengen country to another non-schengen country to pass through the schengen states. It is valid for up to 5 days.
  • A transit visa application requires that the individual presents the visa for the next destination and an onward flight ticket.
  • Holders of transit visas are not allowed to engage in tourist activities.
  • All visa types allow several entries into Slovakia (multiple-entry visa).
  • A consular interview is required for all visa applicants.
  • The embassy at Abuja can hardly be contacted via phone, all inquiries should be made through emails instead.
