Uruguay is a small town that has been under the shadows of the other larger South American nations. The country offers experiences outside the everyday tourist activity for its visitors, which makes it an appealing destination. Tourists can find themselves caught up in a cow-and-gaucho traffic jam or strolling with mate-toting locals. Visitors need not worry as there are national parks and beach resorts which offers a lot of exciting activities for them to partake in. Surfing and sunbathing are just some of the activities to enjoy on the relaxed beaches in the country. At the various national parks, wildlife like lions, seals, and penguins can be seen. There is also the addition of seeing a football match between Nacional and Penarol, the two most followed football teams in the nation.
 
The tourism industry is one of the most important parts of the country’s economy. In 2012, the industry was estimated to account for 97,000 jobs and 9% of GDP. About 2.8 million tourists visited Uruguay in 2013 which was a significant increase from the number of tourist visits.
 
The maximum amount that can be carried by a foreigner on entry and exit from the country is $10,000, any amount that exceeds this has to be declared with the customs authority of Uruguay. 
 
Nationals from about 72 countries can gain entry into Uruguay without a visa. Some of these countries are; Argentina, Armenia, Belgium. Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom, United States, etc. Citizens of India have to apply for tourist visas but they are not charged for it.

Uruguay Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The tourist visa is issued to those who intend to visit Uruguay for tourism, leisure, sight-seeing.
  • It can also be used to visit friends and relatives, attend ceremonies and festivals.
  • The Uruguay visa is categorized into three (3), based on the number of entries allowed:
    • Single Entry — allows one entry 
    • Multiple Entry — allows multiple entries 
    • In summary, the single-entry visa allows you to enter Uruguay once, while the multiple-entry visa allows you to leave and re-enter Uruguay multiple times during its validity.
  • The validity of the visa is normally 90 days for the single and multiple entry visas.
  • Visa extension can be done by going to an Immigration office and requesting an extension at 28 USD for an additional three months.
  • Single-entry visa costs 60 USD, and multiple-entry visa costs 100 USD.
  • All applicants should ensure that they have an accommodation reservation in Uruguay. Details of the accommodation is required for visa processing.
  • The accommodation must be valid for the applicant’s duration of stay.
  • Studying or working is not allowed with this visa regardless of how short the course or job might be.
  • Individuals are required to obtain a Police clearance showing clean criminal records.
  • Postal applications should be accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
  • For private visits, a letter of invitation from the Uruguayan host, carrying information such as the relationship between both parties, duration of stay and personal details of the host.
  • Applicants should ensure that their vaccinations are up to date with a medical certificate as proof.

Uruguay Business Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • Business visa is issued to those who intend to go to Uruguay for commercial and trade purposes.
  • Other activities that can be carried out with this visa involves attending conferences and seminars.
  • This visa cannot be used to take up gainful employment by individuals.
  • Negotiating and signing of business contracts, investing in Uruguayan companies, interviewing and employing staff. These can be done by holders of a business visa.
  • Self-employed applicants are required to include their company’s registration certificate and tax clearance in the documents.
  • An invitation letter from the company in Uruguay stating the nature of the business to be conducted, the duration of stay, and the sponsor of the trip.
  • Whoever will sponsor the trip should provide proof that they have sufficient funds for that purpose. The proof could be a payment slip or bank statement and must be recent.
  • Applicants of this visa are not allowed by law to engage in any form of activity that they would receive payments for.
  • Previous dealings between both parties involved in the business should be provided if there are any.
  • A medical certificate valid for the duration of the stay is required.
  • Receipts of visa application payments are to be submitted.
  • Applicants are to submit proof of incentive of returning to their country at the expiration of their visa. It could be documents of assets in home country or details of dependent relatives.
  • Overstaying your visa in Uruguay is illegal and the offender will be fined 560 pesos (approximately $28 USD).
