• The US tourist visa is also known as the B2 visa
• It is usually issued for tourism, vacation, and other recreational purposes
• The tourist visa can also be used to visit friends and families, receive medical treatment, and participate in contests as long as you will not be paid
• Studying towards obtaining a degree with this visa is prohibited, however, you can learn a skill or participate in short courses such as cooking courses
• As a holder of this visa, you are not allowed to perform before a paying audience
• The stay period of a US visa is 30 days but it is a multiple entry visa so you are allowed to visit the US several times for up to 10 years without applying for a new visa
• It is illegal to take up any paid or unpaid employment with this visa

• In the case that they also get admitted into a SEVIS institution, they can change to an F-1 visa after obtaining the I-20 form but will have to apply for a new visa to re-enter the United States
• The institution you are applying to has to be a SEVP-approved school in the United States. After the school has accepted you, you will be registered for SEVIS and pay a fee different from the application fee
• Your spouse or child travelling with you also has to be registered for SEVIS but will not need to pay the fee
• If you cannot attend the consular interview in your country, you can attend it in another country. It is although more difficult to qualify for the visa outside your home country.
• Holders of this visa must be full-time students and are required to provide proof of financial means enough to last the duration of the course
• Your transcripts, test score from your US school or other similar documents might be required
• The student visa is usually issued up to 120 days before the start of the course, however, you will not be allowed to enter the US until 30 days before the course starts.
• Proof that you will return to your home county when you have completed your studies is required
• The officer at the port of entry also issues a Form I-94 with expiration date indicated as "D/S" (Duration of Status), which means that the student is in authorized status in the United States until the program end date indicated on the I-20

If you overstay the duration of your visa for one year, you would be barred from reentering the country for ten years. If you overstay for less than 180 days, leaving the USA would not trigger any bars to reentry.
