Basic Travel Requirements for Somalis visiting Italy
Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Italian Visa.
- A duly filled and signed visa application form.
- All the fields of the form must be filled accurately.
- A valid international passport with at least two free pages, and 6months validity.
- Two clear coloured passport-size photos taken on a plain white background.
- Proof of payment of visa application fee.
- Travel health insurance.
- Hotel accommodation- for tourist visa applicants.
- An invitation letter from a sponsor in Italy – For family visa applicants.
- And any other documents supporting the purpose of the planned visit.
- Proof of financial capacity.

- A copy of a birth certificate issued by the National Population Commission.
- A letter from the applicant’s school stating clearly the class attended and permission of absence.
- Written consent from parents in the form of a sworn Affidavit issued by a High Court including the parent’s identity photograph and a copy of his/her passport.

Italy Business Visa Eligibility & Requirements
- The Italian Business Visa is issued to all nationals including Somalians who wish to visit the country for the purpose of business activities such as attending conferences, seminars, conducting business and other commercial activities.
- This visa can only be issued to applicants not being paid for work by an entity within Italy.
- If the applicant intends to undertake paid work in Italy he/she will need to obtain a work permit.
- The business visa has a validity of 90 days but can be extended for another 90 days.
- If the business traveler wishes to stay in the country longer than 90 days, they would need to apply for a residence permit.
- The validity of the single-entry visa or double-entry visa mostly depends on the embassy.
- You should keep in mind that this does not grant the applicant the right to take up new employment in Italy.
- The following documents are required from foreign nationals in addition to existing requirements:
- An Invitation letter from the Italian company that the Somalian national will be visiting and their address along with travel dates.
- A letter from their employer stating and/or allowing them for business travel.
- Bank statement from the last 6 months.
- The invitation letter must also mention how the expenses of the applicant is going to be covered during his/her travel. It must state clearly whether it will be sponsored by the employer or the local Italian company.
Italy Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements
- The Italian Tourist Visa is issued to tourists who wish to visit the country for leisure, holiday, and sight-seeing.
- This visa has a maximum duration of 90 days of stay duration.
- Babies applying for this are granted visa-free while application for children between 6-12 costs 35 Euros and for adults costs 60 Euros.
- The Tourist visa Single-entry validity is 90 days, spread over a period of 180 days.
- Somalian nationals who want to travel on this visa should carefully read the required documents that must be submitted together with their visa application. They should ensure that they have all the documents required, as lack of one or more documents can result in a visa denial.
- Applicants are strongly advised to submit originals and photocopies of their own supporting documents.
- Documents submitted in photocopies only will not be considered in view of the visa evaluation.
- Applicants should be aware that submission of photocopies only might lead to a visa refusal.
- The only documents that can be submitted in photocopy are the identity card and the passport of the Italian sponsor signing the letter of invitation.
- All adult applicants should always submit their own personal bank statements, irrespectively of the scope of trip (business or tourism). Applicants are strongly advised to do so as without the personal bank statements there could be no correct evaluation of the application and this might lead to a visa denial.
- In case of applicants who are owners of small businesses, if for some reason they have only their company’s bank statement, an original letter of the bank stating that the applicant is the sole signatory of the account should be submitted.
- You should be informed that the Italian consulate would require a minimum of three (3) consecutive empty pages in your passport in order to issue a visa stamp on your passport.
Italy Medical Visa Eligibility & Requirements
- The Italian medical visa is granted to Somalians visiting Italy to seek or receive medical treatment.
- A medical diagnosis from the medical institution in your country stating the nature of the applicant’s illness and the reason the treatment will be best gotten in the country is required.
- A family member or friend travelling with the patient to Italy should apply for their visa separately, as they cannot travel with the patient's medical visa.
- A letter from the medical institution in Italy indicating the type of the applicant’s treatment and stating the duration of the treatment.
- Proof that the applicant has paid up to 30% of the medical fee.
- Any other correspondence between the doctor in Italy and the local physician should be provided.
- A document containing the patient’s bio-data, phone number, and active e-mail address is required. This information should be typed and signed by the applicant.
- Minors applying for this visa are required to provide a copy of their birth certificate. A letter of consent signed by both parents of the minor should be provided.
Italy Student Visa Eligibility & Requirements
- This student visa otherwise known as the Type-D visa is issued to Somalians seeking to travel for academic purposes in Italy.
- This visa can be issued as a short-stay and a long-stay visa.
- Short-stay study visa is valid for 90 days, applicants can study language courses with this visa type.
- The long-stay study visa is valid for up to a year and above.
- You have to ensure that your acceptance letter from the institution you have been admitted is available before you can apply for the Italian student visa. Your admission letter must be printed on the institution's letterhead and state the course you will be studying.
- Students applying for this visa should ensure they provide the certificates and transcripts of the previous schools they attended.
- Students are required to provide proof that they have financial support. Students should have at least € 448.07 per month for the academic year, a total of € 5,824.91 per year.
- As a student, you can work part-time as long as it does not affect your study. You will need to apply for a work permit at a local immigration office in Italy. You must, however, need to have a signed employment contract and show a copy at the immigration office.
- You are required to apply for the residence permit in the country where you will be living within 8 working days after their arrival. Students can apply at the post office of their city of residence in Italy.
- The residence visa permit can be renewed. Renewal is done through the local police station.
- Students are required to have proof of adequate knowledge of Italian or English according to the language of the program offered.
- All the documents students will be submitting should be translated to either Italian or English and should be accompanied by the original documents.
- Proof of intention to return to your home countries after your course of study will be required.
