Basic Travel Requirements for South Africans visiting Malta

Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Maltese Visa.

  • Duly completed and signed visa application form.
  • Valid South African passport with at least 3 months validity following departure from Malta. The passport should have at least two blank consecutive pages in the VISA section.
  • Two recent passport sized photographs taken with a white background.
  • Proof of financial support.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Travel itinerary.
  • Birth certificate of children younger than 12.
  • The application for this visa should be made not more than 3 months and not less than 15 days to intended visit.
  • If the applicant is a minor, the parents/legal guardians have to sign the form.
  • Proof of return flight ticket to South Africa.
  • Travel documents.
  • Documentation showing applicant’s ties to home country, e.g. verification from applicant’s employer.
  • A police report showing that the traveler does not have a criminal record.
  • Documentation confirming the purpose of travel.

There has been an increase in the number of hotels over time which also has led to an increase in the number of foreigners who visit the country. On average, 1.6 million tourists visit Malta each year. The tourism industry is very important to the Maltese economy as it contributes to 15% of the country’s GDP.
 
Foreigners are neither allowed entry into the country nor allowed to leave the country with more than €10,000 or its equivalent in any currency. 

Smoking is prohibited in public areas.

Malta Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • Foreigners who apply for the tourist visa intend to visit the country for tourism purposes that may include sightseeing, relaxation and recreation.
  • You can also visit friends and relatives while in the country.
  • If you are visiting a friend or relative in Malta, you are required to present a letter of invitation from your host in the country. The letter must contain the home address and telephone number of your host.
  • Proof of hotel booking reservation must be submitted.
  • For minors, the original copy of your birth certificate is required.
  • You are not allowed to take up paid or unpaid employment while you are in the country with this type of visa.
  • This visa does not serve study purposes. Thus, you cannot be enrolled in any of the institutions of learning in the country.
  • If you are traveling with a pet, the animal must have a microchip, rabies vaccination and official veterinary certificate.
  • Receipt of paid visa application fees should be tendered.
  • South African stay permit is required for non-citizens of South Africa.
  • You are expected to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations of your visa.
  •  You are expected to leave the country upon the expiration of your visa
  • The visa allows its holders multiple entry to the country.
  • The visa is valid for 3 months.
  • This visa costs 60€ for adults, 35€ for children between the ages of 6-12 and free for children under 6.

Malta Business Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The business visa is meant for travelers visiting Malta to engage in various business activities.
  • With this visa, you can meet up with existing and intending partners in the country to develop and maintain business relationships.
  • You can negotiate and sign business contracts while you are in the country.
  • You can attend business summits, conferences and trade fairs while in the country.
  • A letter of invitation from your partner company in Malta is required before you can be issued this visa. The letter should have the office address of the company and the duration and purpose of your visit.
  • Certificate of business registration of the company should also be provided.
  • A letter from your current employer in South Africa should be provided. The letter should state that he is aware of your business leave and the duration of your leave. Your position in the company should also be stated.
  • If you are traveling with a minor,  a letter of consent signed by both parents of the minor should be provided.
  • If you have prior business dealings with the company, proof of this is required.
  • You cannot be paid for any of the services you render while you are in the country.
  • The visa is valid for 90 days.

Malta Transit Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa is for foreigners making stopovers in the country.
  • Those transiting through the country to their destination can also apply for this visa.
  • With this visa, you can neither study nor take up paid or unpaid employment.
  • You cannot seek for public funds while in the country.
  • The flight ticket and visa to your destination country should be provided.
  • If you are traveling with a pet, your pet must have a microchip, rabies vaccination and official veterinary certificate.
  • This visa is a single-entry visa and it is valid for 3 days.
  • Before the expiry of your visa, you are expected to leave the country.
  • Minors should have the original copy of their birth certificate.
  • Two recent passport photographs and a valid passport is required.

Malta Student Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa is for those with the intention of studying in the country.
  • Applicants of this visa must have been accepted into one of the institutions of learning in the country.
  • A letter of acceptance from the school which you have been accepted to should be tendered.
  • Transcripts and certificates from previous schools attended should also be tendered.
  • You are allowed to work part-time as long as it does not affect your study.
  • If you are a minor, a letter of consent signed by both parents should be provided. Also, the original copy of your birth certificate is needed.
  • You are allowed to extend your visa to cover the duration of your study in the country.
  • Receipt of paid visa application is required.
  • Holders of this visa are expected to follow the rules of this visa.
  • Valid Passport is required.
  • Two colored passport photographs as recent as six months.
  • Proof of Travel Medical insurance with a minimum coverage of  30€.
  • Proof of accommodation is needed
  • Proof of financial subsistence for the duration of stay is also required.
