General Requirements for Eritrea Visa
Eritrea Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements
- Thais traveling to Eritrea for tourism and visitation purposes are required to apply for the Eritrean tourist visa.
- The Eritrean tourist visa is valid for 90 days.
- Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required.
- Travelers traveling for visitation purposes are required to provide invitation letter.
- Visa is not required for minors under 18 years of age if accompanied by parents holding a National ID Card issued by Eritrea.
- Visitors who overstay their visas will face severe punishments.
- Visitors are required to provide proof of sufficient funds to cover their entire stay in Eritrea. This should come in form of bank statements.
- Travelers are required to declare amounts over $10,000 USD upon entry into Eritrea.
- Visitors must save all receipts for purchases and foreign exchanges and present these upon departure. Failure to report foreign currency or electronics, or meet customs requirements can result in confiscation of possessions, fines, and imprisonment.
- Visitors are required to obtain permits for travel more than 25 km outside of Asmara. Applications for travel permits are available at the two Ministry of Tourism offices located on Harnet Avenue and Airport Road.
- Visitors are not permitted to approach or cross the Djibouti-Eritrea land border.
- You may be subject to certain obligations, including taxes and conscription into national service. You need proof of payment of the 2 percent income tax to obtain any civil documents (e.g. birth certificates, educational transcripts, property ownership records, court records).
- The Eritrean Nakfa (ERN) is the official currency. The economy is cash-based and there are no ATMs.

- The business letter from the sending company in Thailand must have the following requirements:
- Brief introduction of the applicant (that includes the position held in the company by the applicant).
- Nature of business to be conducted.
- Guarantee of sufficient funds for the travel.
- A letter of invitation written on the company’s letterhead should also be provided. The letter should state the duration and purpose of your visit.
- If the travel expenses of applicants would be taken care of by the company in Eritrea, it should be stated in the letter provided by the company.
- A letter from your current employer indicating your employment status and position held in the company is needed too. This letter should also state the purpose of your visit to Eritrea.
- A certificate of business registration of the company in Thailand should be submitted with other documents.
