Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to walk around Amsterdam at night?

As for areas to avoid, most Amsterdam neighborhoods are safe for walking, even alone, with a few exceptions. One place to avoid come nightfall is the Red Light District. While it is filled with all types of people during the day, the area attracts seedier visitors and vagrants at night.

What is the best time of the year to visit Netherlands?

The best time weather-wise is from mid-April to mid-October. July and August are the peak months for visitors. The weather overall is never severely cold or hot as the temperatures are influenced by the North Sea (the Netherlands has a maritime climate). Most rain falls in the winter and it can feel damp and chilly.

What should I wear in Netherlands?

During the warmer days, you will be able to wear shorts. Denim is always comfortable and allows for mobility; however, avoid skirts and dresses as they're not practical for the weather and the cycling/walking activities you will be doing.

Should I tip in Amsterdam?

Gratuities are built into most hospitality services, so it would not be seen as rude if you do not tip at a restaurant or in a taxi. But although tipping is not necessarily expected in Amsterdam, it is customary to leave some extra cash as thanks for great service.
