Facts about China
China,
officially the People's Republic of China is a country in East Asia
and the world's most populous country, with a population of around
1.404 billion in 2017. Covering approximately 9,600,000 square
kilometres, it is the third or fourth-largest country by total
area. China’s
political system was based on hereditary Monarchies or dynasties
beginning with the semi-mythical Xia dynasty in 21st Century BCE.
China as a whole was ravaged by feudal warlordism with Japan during World War II. The Chinese civil war resulted in a division of territory in 1949 when the communist party of China led by Mao Zedong established the people’s republic of China on mainland China. Also the Kuomintang led nationalist government retreated to the Island of Taiwan where it governed until 1996 when Taiwan changed to democracy.
China’s economy has been one of the world’s fastest-growing with its annual growth rates consistently above 6 per cent. According to the World bank China’s GDP grew from $150 billion in 1978 to $12.24 trillion in 2017. In 2018, its GDP increased to $13.5 trillion (90 trillion yuan). Since 2010, China has been the country with the world’s second-largest economy by nominal GDP and the largest economy in the world by purchasing power parity in 2014.
China is also the world’s largest exporter and second-largest importer of goods and also the home to some of the world’s largest tech giants such as Huawei, Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba as it is the world’s most technologically advanced nation. Since 2019, China has the highest number of rich people in the world.

China Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements
- Ugandans intending to visit China for sightseeing, leisure, vacation or tourism purposes can apply for the Chinese tourist visa.
- The Chinese tourist visa is also known as the Type L visa. It is a short-stay visa valid for a period of 30 days.
- If traveling with an organized tour group, you might not have an individual visa in your passport. Instead, the tour group will be issued a group tour visa bearing all the members' names. In such a situation, supply your details to the travel agency beforehand and you will have no further concerns.
- If travelling independently, you need to handle visa affairs on your own.
- Documents showing the itinerary, including proof of round trip tickets booking and proof of hotel reservation, are required.
- Applicants traveling alone are required to provide an invitation letter. If you are traveling with an official tour group, you do not need to provide an invitation.
- You must have a valid visa to exit China and you must leave China before the expiration of the listed duration of stay.
- The currency used in China is Yen.
- The TAR (Tibet Autonomous Region) requires special permits for tourist travel, most often obtained through a Chinese travel agent. If you enter a restricted area without the requisite permit, you could be fined, taken into custody, and deported for illegal entry.
- Failure to register with the police within 24 hours of arrival in the country could result in fines and deportation. You can register with the hotel staff or the local police station.
- Local regulations require foreigners to carry valid passports and Chinese visas or residence permits at all times.
- Police, school administrators, transportation officials, and hotel staff may check your visa to make sure you have not overstayed. If you overstay your visa’s duration, you may be denied service by hotels, airports and train stations, as well as face fines and detention.
- Police regularly conduct unannounced drug tests on people suspected of drug use - including foreign citizens. Police may require you to provide a urine, blood, or hair follicle sample on short notice, and may force you to participate in the collection.
To ensure your safety and security in China, you should:
- Pay attention to surroundings.
- Report any concerns to the local police.
- Call “110,” the local equivalent to the “911” if you find yourself in any danger.
- Learn to take routine safety precautions.
