Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to visit Laos?
The small, landlocked country of Laos is best visited between October and April when the weather's warm and dry throughout. River travel is best between November and January when high water levels make passage easy along Laos' main waterway, the Mekong River.
Is Laos safe for tourist travel?
Generally, Laos is a safe place to visit, and most tourists don't have much complains travelling there. However, there are occasional reports of petty theft, and the occasional bag snatching, but these can be avoided by being cautious with your belongings.
What should I wear in Laos?
Laos is a very traditional country and body-revealing clothes should be avoided. Tourists are advised to pack light, as it is easy and cheap to get clothes laundered. The tropical monsoon climate means it is humid and hot all year round; lightweight, loose-fitting clothes in natural fibres such as cotton, silk or linen will keep you cooler.
Does Laos use US dollars?
Although Laos's official currency is the Kip, the US dollar is widely accepted in many transactions, so we recommend taking some US dollars in cash. Other foreign currencies can be exchanged at licensed exchange shops, or in the banks.
