Visa type details
Tourist visa
- Central Africans can apply for the Eritrean tourist visa if they intend to travel to Eritrea for tourism purposes.
- This visa is originally valid for 30 days, but it can be extended to 90 days.
- Foreigners are required to provide proof of yellow fever vaccination.
- Foreigners holding amount of over $10,000 USD must have it declared upon entry.
- You’re not permitted to take more than 1000 nafka (ERN) out of Eritrea.
- If you declared currency on arrival, when you leave you will have to show that any foreign currency missing was exchanged at a branch of ’Himbol’, the State foreign currency exchange.
- If you spend any US dollars at an official hotel you must get a receipt to present along with the currency declaration form when you leave the country.
- If you fail to comply with these regulations you may face prosecution leading to a heavy fine, as well as a delay to your departure.
- Strict restrictions are in place for the type and quantity of electronics allowed into the country. Check with the Eritrean Ministry of Finance on the most current regulations.
- All electronic items (e.g. laptops, mobile phones, cameras) must be declared upon arrival. Customs officials may confiscate previously undeclared items when you depart.
- Non-residents may need to show that they are leaving Eritrea with the declared electronics in their possession.
- Visitors must save all receipts for purchases and foreign exchanges and present these upon departure. Failure to report foreign currency or electronics, or meet customs requirements can result in confiscation of possessions, fines, and imprisonment.
- Travelers are required to obtain permits for travel more than 25 km outside of Asmara.
- Applications for travel permits are available at the two Ministry of Tourism offices located on Harnet Avenue and Airport Road.

- The Eritrean business visa is for Central Africans intending to visit Mali for business purposes.
- Proof of yellow fever vaccination must be provided.
- A business letter from the sending company in Central African Republic or the sponsoring company in Eritrea is required.
- The business letter from the sending company in Central African Republic must have the following requirements:
- Brief introduction of the applicant (that includes the position held in the company by the applicant).
- Nature of business to be conducted.
- Guarantee of sufficient funds for the travel.
- A letter of invitation written on the company’s letterhead should also be provided. The letter should state the duration and purpose of your visit.
- If the travel expenses of applicants would be taken care of by the company in Mali, it should be stated in the letter provided by the company.
- A letter from your current employer indicating your employment status and position held in the company is needed too. This letter should also state the purpose of your visit to Eritrea.
- A certificate of business registration of the company in Central African should be submitted with other documents.
