Laos is a relatively safe country for travellers, although certain areas remain off-limits because of unexploded ordinance left over from decades of warfare. As a visitor, however, you are an obvious target for thieves (who may include your fellow travellers), so do take necessary precautions.

Laos is famous for the Bolaven Plateau which has great scenery, ethnic villages and unexplored corners. It is probably best known for being home to some of Southeast Asia's most spectacular waterfalls including Tad Fane and Dong Hua Sao.

Laos has a tropical monsoon climate with a pronounced rainy season from May through October, a cool dry season from November through February and a hot dry season in March and April. Generally, monsoons occur at the same time across the country, although that time may vary significantly from one year to the next.
