Visa type details

Tourist visa

  • Gambians intending to travel to Sudan for tourism and visitation purposes can apply for the Sudanese tourist visa.
  • The Sudanese tourist visa is valid for 90 days.
  • Travelers are required to register within three days of arriving in Sudan through Khartoum, Port Sudan, Gallabat or Wadi Halfa.
  • An invitation letter from your sponsor is required. If you are not traveling to visit family and friends, the hotel you'll be staying in can act as your sponsor.
  • If for some reason your hotel can't or won't do this, then local tour companies may accept to complete all the registration formalities for you for about S£150.
  • Proof of yellow fever vaccination must be provided.
  • A permit, obtainable from the Ministry of Tourism by your hotel or travel agent, is required for travel outside of the greater Khartoum area.
  • A copy of the permit will be sent to the Aliens Department at the Ministry of Interior. A separate travel permit is required for travel to Darfur.
  • While in Sudan, avoid all demonstrations and public gatherings. Even events intended to be peaceful can become violent.
  • Do not take photographs of any areas which may be sensitive to the government, including police and military installations, camps for internally displaced persons, and border areas.
  • Photography requires a permit from the External Information Centre in Khartoum (part of the Ministry of Information). Even with a permit, it is illegal to take pictures of military installations, public utilities, infrastructure (e.g., bridges, airports), slum areas, or beggars.
  • Do not take photographs or use equipment with cameras (including cell phone cameras and laptops) close to government buildings. You could be fined, have your photographic equipment confiscated without notice, and risk detention and arrest. Do not take photos of a Sudanese without their permission.
  • Personal status laws govern legal procedures pertaining to family relations, including marriage, divorce, child custody, maintenance (financial support), and inheritance. We strongly advise you seek local legal counsel if you must engage in local legal matters and make certain you are aware of your rights and responsibilities.
  • The Sudanese pound (SDG) is the official currency. Sudan operates on a cash-only economy; credit cards are not accepted, even at large hotels.
  • Carry sufficient funds to cover all your expenses for the duration of your stay. Bills must be printed after 2006 and unblemished. Do not carry a large amount of cash because travelers carrying large amounts of currency have been detained.

Business visa

  • Gambians intending to travel to Sudan for business purposes can apply for the Sudanese business visa.
  • Businessmen and businesswomen are allowed to negotiate and sign business contracts with their partners during business meetings.
  • An original visa with at least six months' validity must be provided by the applicant.
  • Foreigners in Sudan on this visa are not prohibited from attending trade fairs, business summits, and conferences.
  • A letter from the applicant’s employer in the Gambia should be provided. The letter should be addressed to the Embassy of Sudan and signed by a senior manager.
  • The letter should introduce the applicant and state the nature of the business to be conducted.
  • If the applicant is meeting more than one company, the names and addresses of the companies should be stated.
  • The letter should also show the following:
    • Purpose of the trip.
    • Activities to be performed during the trip.
    • Source of financial responsibility or expenses to be covered by the applicant's company or host company.
    • Duration of stay.
