Student visa
- A non-Japanese citizen intending to study in Japan will need a student visa.
- The Japanese student visa is known as “ryuugaku” visa, which loosely translates to "College student" visa.
- Even those intending to go to high school in Japan will need the ryuugaku visa.
- The visa application must be done at the Japanese embassy or consulate general nearest to where the applicant lives.
- The institution where the student is intending to study may need to submit a letter stating the reason of invitation.
- If the student (ryuugaku) visa is valid for three months or more, the holder will be issued a Residence Card (zairyuu card) at the airport (in the case of Narita, Haneda, Chubu and Kansai airports) or by mail at a later date to the address recorded in your visa application.
- Whether you receive a Residence Card at the airport or get a stamp for later issuance of it in your passport, you must go to the office of the local authority (e.g., ward or city office) for the area you live in Japan within 14 days to register your details.
- A person on a student visa may apply for permission to do part-time work.
- Once granted, permission allows a student to work up to 28 hours per week during study term, and up to 8 hours per day during study vacation periods.
- The work involved must be "above-board," i.e., have nothing to do with gambling or sex.
Work visa
- Non-Japan nationals seeking employment in Japan will need a work visa.
- In recent years, Japan has shown a greater interest in – and willingness to hire – foreign workers.
- Those who have received a job offer and/or employers who wish to engage a foreign worker in Japan must first make an application for a COE.
- Once the COE is completed along with all supporting documentation, the materials are submitted to the Japan Immigration Office for review and evaluation.
- The evaluation period ranges from one to three months, with two months being a typical evaluation period.
- Highly skilled professionals typically receive preferential, expedited evaluations.
- Once the COE is granted and received, the applicant can then take that COE to the Japanese embassy or consulate in their country of citizenship or residence, to have it converted to a work visa.
- Typically, this process only takes a few business days.
- Once visa is in-hand, the employee may commence work in Japan.
