Basic Travel Requirements for Kenyans visiting Eritrea

Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Eritrean Visa.

  • A Kenyan passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended arrival date and must have 2 blank pages for visa stamp.

  • Duly completed and signed visa application form.

  • The parents or legal guardians are required to sign the form if the applicant is a minor.

  • Three passport-size photographs (4.5 x 3.5 cm) taken on a white background.

  • Travel documents must be completely provided.

  • Proof of financial capability.

  • Proof of accommodation or hotel reservations.

  • Copy of return flight ticket.

  • Documentation showing applicants' ties to home country.

  • A police report showing the traveler does not have a criminal record.

Eritrea is home to a large number of wildlife and the regulations enforced by the Eritrean government has helped to steadily increase the number of wildlife animals. Visitors are not allowed to take photographs of military and government buildings. If you want to exchange money, it should be done at a state foreign currency exchange Himbol branch, it is illegal to do it anywhere else. All foreign currencies in excess of $10,000 should be declared on entry into Eritrea.

Foreigners are required to declare all electronic items in their possession on entry into Eritrea. Failure to do so may result in the confiscation of such items on departure. There is a $20 departure tax normally included in airline ticket prices.</o:p>

Eritrea Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • The Tourist Visa allows foreigners to visit Eritrea for recreation, relaxation, and sightseeing.
  • Foreigners can visit their friends and relatives residing in the country.
  • Applicants visiting their friends and relatives in the country are expected to have a letter of invitation from their host.
  • The letter should state the applicants' relationship with the host, as well as, the contact details of the host.
  • Kenyans who intend to travel through a tourist group would have to provide a letter of invitation from a registered tourist group in Eritrea.
  • Kenyans in Eritrea are not prohibited from attending events and festivals holding in the country.
  • Applicants' passport with a validity of not less than six months should be submitted. The passport  should have at least two blank pages for the Eritrea visa stamp.
  • Applicants are to submit a completed and signed visa application form.
  • A letter from your employer written on the company’s letterhead confirming employment and allowance of leave. The letter should state the address of the company and the duration of your leave.
  • For non-Kenyans, a copy of their stay permit in Kenya is required.
  • Minors should present the original copy of their birth certificate. If the minor is  traveling with one or none of his/her parents, a letter of consent signed by the parents is required.
  • Proof of financial sufficiency covering the applicants duration of stay should be submitted.
  • Proof of the incentive of returning to your country at the expiry of your visa.

Eritrea Business Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • Business travelers traveling to Eritrea to foster and maintain business relationships with their partner companies in the country are the eligible applicants of this visa.
  • Kenyans applying for the business visa may also have the intention of negotiating and signing contracts with their partners in the country.
  • During your time in the country, you can attend conferences, trade fairs, and business summits.
  • Foreigners who intend to attend conferences in the country should ensure they register for the conferences they wish to attend before leaving their country.
  • A passport with a validity of at least six months from the departure date should be submitted.
  • The Eritrean business visa has a validity of 90 days.
  • The visa takes about 15 working days for processing. applicants are advised to make their application at least 1 month before the proposed date of travel.
  • An official letter of invitation from your partner company in Eritrea is required. The letter must indicate your job position, the address of the company, duration, and purpose of the business trip.
  • If you are meeting with more than one company, a letter of invitation from each company should be submitted during the visa application.
  • A letter from your employer in Kenya stating awareness and allowance of your business leave. The letter should also state the position you are holding in the company, the duration of your visit and the purpose of your visit.
  • If your employer or the company you are meeting within the country is responsible for your finances, it should be stated in the business letter.
  • If you are self-employed, a copy of your certificate of business registration and the income tax return is required.
  • If there have been previous business dealings between you and the company you are meeting up with, proof of this is necessary.
  • Applicants should provide computer generated flight itinerary from the airline or a travel agency or copy of airline ticket showing entry and departure from Eritrea.
  • Receipt of paid visa application fee should be provided.
  • A document which shows that you have the incentive of returning to your country should be provided.
  • Kenyans cannot take up paid or unpaid employment whilst they are in the country.
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate is compulsory.
  • Applicants are advised not to make irreversible payments prior to the outcome of their visa application.

Eritrea Transit Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • Kenyans applying for this visa have the intention of making stopovers in an airport or seaport in the country.
  • Foreigners can stop over at an airport in Eritrea and board a connecting flight to the destination country.
  • Applicants of this visa should make sure the visa and other entry permits of their destination country are made available.
  • The flight ticket to your destination country is a necessary document to be submitted during the visa application process.
  • The Transit Visa cannot be extended.
  • The visa has a validity of 24 hrs.
  • The processing time for this visa is 21 days.
  • Minors should ensure they have the original copy of their birth certificate and a letter of consent signed by both their parents.
  • Foreigners should possess a certificate of vaccination against yellow fever.
