  • Passport with a validity of 6 months after the intended departure from the country.
  • Two 2 x 2 recent passport-sized photograph taken with a white background
  • Flight tickets with entry and exit dates.
  • Proof of financial support in form of a bank statement which is not older than 3 months showing sufficient funds for the duration of your stay in the country.
  • Proof of accommodation in form of a hotel reservation.
  • Copy of return flight ticket showing that you have the incentive to return to Malaysia.
  • Valid travel insurance to cover the period of your entire stay.

Tourist visa

  • The Turkmenistan tourist visa is issued to Malaysians traveling to Turkmenistan for tourism and visitation purposes.
  • This visa is valid for 10 days to 12 months.
  • Tourist visa holders are required to register their stay at the State Tourism Registration Office with 72 business hours of arrival into Turkmenistan.
  • Applicants will need to acquire a visa support letter or letter of invitation (LOI) from a licensed travel agency to get a tourist visa.
  • Visitors are required to pay an additional US$14 fee on entry for an entry card that will list their exit point in Turkmenistan.
  • Applicants cannot travel to Turkmenistan individually, a tour agent should plan your stay and connect you to a tour group.
  • Applicants traveling with minors are required to provide their birth certificates
  • If you arrive without a visa or certified letter of invitation, authorities may hold you at the airport until you arrange transportation out of Turkmenistan.
  • Currency restriction for exit out of Turkmenistan is $3,000.
  • Once you arrive in Turkmenistan, you must do the following:
    • Inform the State Migration Service in advance of travel outside the city where you are registered. You face fines and deportation if you fail to do so.
    • Register your departure with the State Migration Service one day before you leave. You must register and de-register at the same SMS office.
  • Failure to register properly can result in fines, arrest, and/or deportation.
  • Turkmenistan is mostly a cash economy. Most businesses, including airlines and hotels, do not accept credit cards. While there are some ATMs in Ashgabat, getting personal checks cashed can take up to two months.
  • The official currency in Turkmenistan is the Turkmen Manat. It is illegal to use foreign currencies and to exchange money on the black market. You can obtain Manat in ATM machines.
  • Customs regulations are strict, particularly regarding carpets, jewelry, musical instruments, art, archaeological artifacts, antiques, and protected animals.
  • Travel permits for certain regions in the country are required.

Business visa

  • The Turkmenistan business visa is issued to Malaysians traveling to Turkmenistan for business purposes.
  • This visa is valid from 10 days to 12 months.
  • Business visa holders are required to register their stay at the State Migration Service within 72 business hours of arrival into Turkmenistan.
  • Travelers to Turkmenistan may engage in the activities below on a business visa:
    • Attend business meetings.
    • Attend conferences and conventions.
    • Tour a company facility.
    • Negotiate contracts.
  • A letter of invitation from sponsor (either host company or individual) in Turkmenistan (certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ashgabat) explaining the relationship to the applicant and the purpose of travel. In addition, the letter must indicate the duration of stay, place of stay, and contact information.
  • The applicants are required to provide a business cover letter. The cover letter should include the following information: introduction of the applicant, an indication of the applicant's employment status/position held in the company, and the purpose of visit in Turkmenistan.
  • The business letter must also indicate who will be financially responsible for the applicant and must provide detailed contact information in Turkmenistan.
  • Proof of travel arrangement must be provided. It must come in the form of a computer-generated flight itinerary from the airline or a travel agency or copy of airline ticket showing entry and departure from Turkmenistan.
  • Travelers planning to stay in Turkmenistan for more than 3 months need to present an HIV certificate from a doctor.
