Basic Travel Requirements for Rwandans visiting Austria

Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Austrian Visa.


  • Your visa application form must be correctly filled in English, signed and stamped.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after intended exit date from Austria. It must have 2 blank pages for visa and must not have been issued for more than 10 years ago.
  • Two recent passport photographs that meet the Schengen visa application requirements.
  • Minors are required to present their birth certificates and a letter of consent signed by both parents.
  • The applicant is required to present a valid National ID or residence permit to prove residence in Rwanda.
  • Travel insurance that covers medical emergencies up to a minimum of €30,000 is essential.
  • Travel itinerary showing entry and exit dates from Austria.
  • Proof of sponsorship which could either be recent bank statement or a letter from your host in Austria affirming full financial responsibility during your stay in Austria.
  • Documentation showing status either as an employee, student or business owner. This is to prove that the applicant has incentives to return to Rwanda.
  • Proof of accommodation. This could be hotel booking or an invitation letter from an host in Austria detailing purpose and duration of travel.
  • You might be required to submit a cover letter mentioning every detail of your trip and that of travelling companions.
  • All documents must be drawn up in or translated into English or German.
  • The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you intend to travel. You should apply no later than 15 working days in advance.
  • This visa costs €60 for Rwandans 12 years and above, €35 for children between 6-11 and is free for children under 6.
  • The visa is has a validity of 90 days.
  • You cannot enter or exit Austria with more than €10,000.
  • There's no Austrian embassy in Rwanda so visa applications must go through the one in Nairobi.
