Kiribati is known for its lagoons and wonderful white sand beaches that offer tourists a remote setting for fishing, diving, yachting, and bird-watching. This makes Kiribati a prime holiday destination. Tourists visit the Phoenix Islands which is in South Tarawa. The island contains the world’s largest marine protected areas and an ecosystem which is home to a host of aquatic and bird species.
 
Kiribati is ranked 197th in the world in terms of tourism. In 2017, a total of 5,800 tourists visited the country which was a significant rise in the number of tourists who visited the country in 2016. The tourism industry was responsible for generating up to $3.4 million in revenue which corresponds to 1.8 percent of the country’s gross domestic product.
 
All visitors are not allowed to enter Kiribati with more than 5000 Australian Dollars. Importation of firearms, ammunition, explosives, counterfeit money, knives and pornography is strictly prohibited. 
 
All nationals of European member states excluding Ireland and the United Kingdom may enter Kiribati visa-free for 90 days within a 180-day period.

Kiribati Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • This visa is issued to those who want to visit Kiribati for leisure. 
  • People who want to visit the country for purposes such as tourism, meeting, workshop, holidays or transit can also be issues this visa.
  • This visa is issued as an entry visa to Kiribati.
  • This visa can be issued as a Single-Entry visa or a Multiple-entry visa.
  • The Single-entry visa costs $40 AUD and is valid for up to 3 months while the Multiple-Entry visa costs $80 AUD and is valid for up to 12 months.
  • Visa applications are to be done at the British Honorary Consulate of Kiribati in the UK as there is no Kiribati embassy in Rwanda.
  • A transit visa from the UK to Kiribati should also be gotten.
  • Applicants are to have an original passport that was issued not more than 10 years from the application period.
  • The passport should have at least two blank pages for stamps and a passport photo should be attached as well.  
  • Applicants are advised to fill all the information on their forms correctly and completely as incomplete forms would not be attended to.  
  • Applicants are also required to get an entry letter issued to them by the embassy.
  • A document confirming the financial stability of the tourist for the duration of stay is also required.
  • The Entry visa does not permit a visitor to engage in work,study,research or business.
  • Applicants of this visa can request for an extension for not more than 3 months.

Kiribati Work Visa Eligibility & Requirements

  • An entry visa to Kiribati is issued to people who intend to work in the country.
  • Applicants are requested to get either a short-stay permit or a long-stay permit that allows them carry out the purpose for going to Kiribati.
  • The short-stay permit is valid for 4 months from the date of issuance and the application fee is $150 AUD.
  • The long-stay permit is valid for at least 3 years from the date of issuance.
  • Applicants are expected to have a valid passport and a passport-sized photo when applying for this permit.     
  • A work permit application letter should also be submitted by the applicant to the embassy.
  • It is required that applicants submit a police report from their residing country stating that they have no criminal record.
  • There should be a medical clearance issued by a reputable hospital in their country of residence.
  • A document showing the terms of employment and job description of the applicant should be attached to all other necessary documents.  
  • The Business Registration Certificate and the Business license of the employing company is required. The bank statement of the company for the last 3 months is also necessary.
  • There should be proof that the hiring company can sponsor the applicant's stay in the country as well as pay the applicant's salary regularly.

  • This visa is issued to people who want to study in Kiribati.
  • Applicants are expected to submit a letter of request for a study permit.  
  • This visa is issued as an entry visa while a study permit indicates the purpose for the applicant of stay.
  • The application form for the visa should be duly filled and void of errors.
  • There should be a support letter from the applicant's guardian if he or she is under 18.
  • A guarantee letter from the school of admission should also be provided.  
  • A document that prove that the applicant would be  catered for throughout his or her stay in Kiribati is required.
  • A police report showing that the applicant has no criminal record is important.
