Parks and nature reserves around the country are home to one-third of the world’s species of birds, 3,500 species of reptiles, 4,000 types of butterflies, pink dolphins, jaguars, and other primates. Tourists also have the luxury of visiting attractive beach resorts and attending festivals during their time in the country.
The tourism industry in Peru is the third-largest industry in Peru, besides the fishing and mining industries. Peru is one of the most visited countries in South America and, as a result, tourism in Peru is growing faster than in other countries on the continent. The annual growth rate of the industry is in fact estimated to be at 25% for the past five years.
Drug-related crimes are harshly treated as drug-smugglers are made to face long prison sentences. The majority of the products made with animals or plants are made from illegal means and could involve protected or endangered species. Tourists are advised not to buy any products made with animals and plants. It is also illegal for artifacts to be exported.
Tourists from North America, Australia, Japan, Thailand, and the European Union can visit Peru without a visa for stays of up to 183 days. Russians are granted entry without a visa for stays of up to 90 days.

General Requirements for Peru Visa
Peru Tourist Visa Eligibility & Requirements
- Rwandans who intend to travel to Peru for tourism purposes can apply for the Peruvian tourist visa.
- Rwandans that are studying at a Peruvian educational institution or desiring to do an internship or apprenticeship at a Peruvian company can also do so with this visa -- as long as the program duration does not exceed 180 days.
- The Peruvian tourist visa is a single-entry visa. It cannot be extended, if you need to re-enter the country after leaving, you will need to get another visa.
- If you are carrying more than $10,000 USD in cash, it must be declared upon entry.
- If you overstay your visa, you will be asked to pay a fine of $1 per day since the expiration of the visa.
- According to Peruvian law, foreign visitors must have a return or onward ticket /passage when entering the country. While this law isn't enforced by Peruvian immigration, airlines often demand to see a return or onward ticket when checking in for a flight to Peru. If you can't provide one, most airlines refuse to board the plane.
- If you do not have an entry record, you will not be allowed to exit the country until immigration authorities confirm the time and place of your entry into the country. This can be a difficult process, costing considerable time and money to resolve.
- Make sure Immigration (Migraciones) records your entry, and then save the record for your exit. An entry record is required even at remote border crossings, where often the proper officials are not present.
- Immediately report lost/stolen passports to local police and keep the report. You must apply for a new passport at the Embassy and obtain a replacement entry record from Migraciones using your police report before exiting Peru.
- Regardless of nationality, all children who are traveling with both birth parents are required to have a valid passport and the necessary visa or citizenship of the country where they are traveling. Peruvian immigration procedures are complex for minors traveling without one or both parents/legal guardians.
- Offenders should expect long pre-trial detention and lengthy prison sentences, under harsh conditions with a significant expense for themselves and/or their families.
- Never agree to carry a suitcase or package through customs for anyone.
Peru Student Visa Eligibility & Requirements
- Rwandans intending to study at a Peruvian educational institution or wanting to do an internship/apprenticeship (without payment) at a Peruvian company, are eligible for a student visa.
- The Peruvian educational institution or training facility you are intending to study in has to be recognized by the Peruvian Ministry of Education or the National Assembly of University Rectors.
- In some cases, "short-term" students of study abroad programs don't have to apply for a student visa. You should contact your Peruvian university, the organization of your exchange program or the nearest Peruvian consulate to check if this exception applies to you.
- Depending on the length of your studies in Peru a temporary or resident student visa may be issued. Students looking to study for more than three months are eligible for a residence permit.
- For students, enrollment certification issued by a recognized Peruvian educational institution is required.
- For interns, an official letter from the foreign university or higher education institution that has to be legalized by the Peruvian Consulate and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is required.
- Students are required to provide proof of sufficient funds. A student should have at least $500 monthly for the entire duration of stay.
- Students are not generally allowed to work with the student visa, but if you are looking to work during official university vacations, you can apply for a special authorization to work at "Migraciones".
- When your visa is about to expire, but you continue to study in Peru, you can extend your student visa at the Peruvian immigration office Migraciones.
Peru Work Visa Eligibility & Requirements
- The Peruvian work visa is for Rwandans looking to work in Peru.
- if you would like to work in a Peruvian company, there are several guidelines to follow.
- Working contracts must meet the following conditions:
- Foreigners may not be employed for a period of more than three years (you can renew your contract later.
- The total wages of foreign workers may not exceed 30% of the total wages the employer pays out, and foreigners may only make up 20% of the employees of a Peruvian company.
- Travelers are required to pay taxes once he or she becomes a resident of Peru, i.e. after 183 days of living and working legally in Peru.
- Keep in mind that there is a “hora peruana” (Peruvian time). This means that Peruvians will often come at least one hour later than the appointed time. This is considered neither offensive nor is it a sign of disinterest.
- Peruvians are not a fan of small talk in the office, and negotiations may often be quite competitive.
- Business decisions are made by the highest-ranking person in the office. Therefore, if you have a pressing issue, be sure to meet with the executives.
- Address people with “Señor” and “Señora” and their last name until you are on a first-name basis with them.
- After two years of legally residing in Peru, you may be eligible for citizenship, provided that you prove ties to the country, such as rental or purchase of residential property, you have been residing there during the whole period and you have knowledge of the Spanish language and the culture and values of the country.
- Although this may seem like common sense, remember that business is conducted in Spanish. Therefore it is important that you either speak the language fluently or bring along an interpreter.
