Application requirements
Documents Rwandan applicants need to provide.
- A Rwandan passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended arrival date and must have 2 blank pages for visa stamp.
- Duly completed and signed visa application form.
- If the applicant is a minor, the parents/legal guardians have to sign the form.
- Passport-size photographs (35 x 45mm) taken in white background.

Visa type details
Tourist visa
- The Schengen tourist visa is for Rwandans visiting Portugal for sightseeing, adventures, and vacations.
- Poland is a popular destination for tourists and it is home to historical attractions. This country possesses a large and fast-growing economy as well.
- Portugal is part of the Schengen Area which is made up of 26 European countries, so a Schengen visa is required.
- There are two types of tourist visa:
- Schengen C-type visa: this visa is valid in Schengen states. It entitles the holder to stay in the territory of all Schengen states. It is valid for 90 days.
- National D-type visa: this visa is for visitors who intend to stay in the territory of Poland for a total of more than 90 days (at least 91 days) during one or more visits within a half-year period calculated from the date of first entry.
- Travelers are required to provide proof of travel medical insurance confirmation of a minimum 30,000 € coverage within Portugal and the entire Schengen area.
- Travelers need to have at least £53 per day to cover financial stability for the duration of the whole stay.
- Tourists are required to register with Portuguese Immigration Service within three days of entering Portugal. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in an administrative offense punishable with a fine from €60 to €160.

Student visa
- The Portuguese student visa is for Rwandan students who have the intention of studying in a school in Portugal.
- Before you start the visa application process, you must make sure you are accepted into one of the educational institutions in Portugal.
- An extension to this visa can be granted to cover the duration of your program in the country.
- Once a student applies for a long-stay student visa, a residence permit will need to be applied for upon arriving in Portugal from the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF)
- Certain documents should be provided by the applicant, this documents must confirm enrollment, state type and length of courses to be taken in Portugal.
- Confirmed Accommodation: from the inviting institution if on campus or confirmed hotel reservations, stating name, address and telephone number of the hotel, including confirmation number.
- Higher education area adopted a system based on three cycles of study, at bachelor, master and doctorate's level, that is:
- 1st cycle of study lasting three or four years to attain a bachelor's degree, in Portugal called a licenciatura.
- 2nd cycle of study lasting one or two years to attain a master's degree, in Portugal called a mestrado.
- 3rd cycle of study lasting three years to attain a doctorate, in Portugal called adoutoramento.
- Letter of admission from the institution you have been accepted into is required. This is proof that you can attend lectures and write exams at school.
- Certificates and transcripts of the schools you previously attended is a necessary document to be provided during the visa application process.
- Proof that you can sufficiently finance your stay in Portugal must be provided.
- It is important that you have at least 38 Euros per day to cover your daily expenses in Portugal.
Business visa
- The Portuguese business visa enables Rwandans to visit Portugal to engage in business activities.
- While you are in the country with this visa, you can meet up with business partners for meetings and to negotiate and sign contracts.
- You can attend trade fairs, conferences, and business summits while you are in the country.
- Invitation letter from the company you will be visiting in Portugal should be provided. The address of the company and the dates of your visit should be stated in the letter.
- If the company you are meeting with in Portugal will be responsible for your expenses while you are in the country, it should be stated in the letter.
- A letter from your employer in Rwanda stating awareness and allowance of your business travel for the duration of your time in the country.
- If the applicant of this visa has been in business with this company before, proof of such events must be provided.
- Certificate of business registration of your business partner in Portugal is required.
- You cannot be gainfully employed while you are in the country with this visa.
Medical visa
- The Medical visa allows Rwandans to visit Portugal for medical treatment.
- Portugal has a state-funded universal healthcare system offered to all.
- Medical diagnosis from your local doctor. It should be accompanied by a document stating why the ailment is best treated in Portugal.
- If you are planning to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days, you can ask for a certificate from your local council office. The certificate allows you to access Portugal’s public healthcare.
- A medical attestation from the hospital or doctor in Portugal, confirming the date of appointment as well as your medical situation is required.
- You are also required to provide proof of international health insurance when applying for your visa. The insurance must have a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. It must have a have an emergency medical evacuation and repatriation benefit.
- If you are employed, a letter from your employer is required. Your employer should state in the letter that he is aware of your leave. Your position and how long you have been employed in the company should be clearly stated.
- Proof of payment of medical fees should be provided. Medical insurance to cover the entire stay should be provided.
- Minors must ensure they possess the original copy of their birth certificate. If they are traveling alone or with one of their parents, a document of consent which is signed by both parents of the minor should be provided.
