About S. Georgia and S. Sandwich Islands
South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands is a remote Island and there is no permanent citizen there. Although, a group of about 35 persons during summer and 16 persons during winter reside on the island. The capital of the Island is King Edward Point.
Queen Elizabeth 11 is the Monarch of the Island. Fishing makes up about 80% of the Island’s economy. Tourism has improved over the years as tourists visit the Island’s attractions and it has contributed to the economy. The official language on the Island is English.
The weather on the Island is harsh and usually very cold. South sandwich Island is much colder than the South Georgia Islands. The highest temperature recorded was about 29°C and the lowest was about -19°C. The best time to visit is from October to March when the weather is favorable.
A large colony of penguins and birds of different species live on the Island. Seals frequent the islands and whales can also be seen in the surrounding waters. Rats were introduced on the Island in the 18th century and it caused so much harm to the native wildlife. An eradication program was planned and was successfully completed and by 2018, no rodent was found to be on the Island. Reindeer came to South Georgia in 1911 but have all been eradicated because of their effect on the native species.
The Island celebrates tooth fish day on the 4th of September as tooth fish is vital to the country’s economy. It also celebrates liberation day on the 14th of June. The Island receives thousands of visitors annually especially during summer. Some tourist attractions on the Island include;

There are no Airports or buses on the Island. The major means of getting in and out of the Island is by the use of cruise ships or yachts which visit the Island on a regular basis. There is no onshore accommodation or hotels on the island for tourists.
