Saint Helena covers an area of about 121 sq. km and it is one of the most remote islands in the world. Queen Elizabeth 11 is the Monarch and as such, the citizens of Saint Helena has full British citizenship.
Saint Helena's economy is weak, and is almost entirely sustained by aid from the British government. The public sector dominates the economy while the tourist industry is based on the promotion of Napoleon's imprisonment. Saint Helena produces the most expensive coffee in the world. It also produces and exports Tungi Spirit, made from the fruit of the prickly or cactus pears.
Most residents on the Island are Anglicans and are members of the Diocese of St Helena. Roman Catholic, the Salvation Army, Baptist, the Seventh-day Adventist, the New Apostolic Church, and Jehovah's Witnesses are the other Christian denominations in Saint Helena. Baha'i Faith has also been represented on the Island.
Education is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 5 and 16. The Island has a public library and a mobile library service which operates weekly in rural areas. English is the official language on the Island.
Saint Helena has one commercial airport and this has increased the number of tourists that visit the island. A freight ship handles all freight to the island. A minibus offers a basic service to carry people around Saint Helena and car hire is also available for visitors.
During summer, the temperature can get to 34°C although you will not sweat much due to the wind. The hottest months are between January and March and the coolest are between June and September. The Island experiences little rainfall during the rainy seasons. Any time of the year is best to visit Saint Helena.
There are very beautiful and interesting places to visit in the country some of which are;
- The Quaint town: It is known for its popular restaurants and Wineries. It is a very beautiful town on the Island and a must visit when in Saint Helena.
- Crane Park: This is a very popular Park for lovers of outdoor activities. The park offers a variety of recreational activities. There is also a tennis court there. It is a place to relax and enjoy the Island.
- Anderson’s Conn Valley: This is a cave like valley where you can enjoy wine tasting. There are several blends of wine here and you will have to book an appointment to visit this valley.
- Saint Helena’s Cyclery: This is a must go when on the Island. This is where you can rent a bike for your excursions in the city. This cyclery will help you with directions and route planning.
The Island welcomes over 50 visitors every day and there are currently only 3 hotels on the Island but there are also a number of guest houses.
