Application requirements
Documents Ugandan applicants need to provide.
- An Ugandan passport valid for at least 6 months from the intended arrival date and must have 2 blank pages for visa stamp.
- Duly completed and signed visa application form.
- If the applicant is a minor, the parents/legal guardians have to sign the form.
- Passport-size photographs (36 mm x 45 mm) taken in grey background.
- Travel document.
- Proof of financial support.
- Proof of accommodation.
- Copy of return flight ticket.
- Medical travel insurance with coverage of at least 30,000 Euros.
- Documentation showing applicant’s ties to home country, e.g. verification from applicant’s employer.
- Documentation confirming the purpose of travel.
- Copy of travel itinerary.
Visa type details
Tourist visa
- Ugandans traveling to Germany for tourism purposes will need a German tourist visa.
- The German Schengen tourist visa is valid for 90 days. The visa is also extendable.
- You should submit a confirmation letter from your health insurance stating coverage for emergency medical treatment with a minimum of €30,000.
- Proof of accommodation must be provided. This can be a hotel booking for your whole stay in the Schengen region, or a letter of invitation by a family member or friend residing in any or the Schengen countries.
- Proof of financial means must be presented. This could be in the form of a bank statement not older than three months, OR a letter of sponsorship by another person (Declaration of Commitment).
- A Cover Letter must be provided by the applicant. This personal cover letter should explain the reason why you wish to visit Germany, how long you intend to stay there, and what you will be doing there, amongst others.
- Proof of civil status is required of the applicant. That could be a marriage certificate, birth certificate of children, death certificate of spouse, ration card (if applicable), etc.
- The currency restriction for entry into Germany is €10,000 euros or equivalent.
- Under German law, it is illegal to bring into or take out of Germany any literature, music, or paraphernalia that glorifies fascism, the Nazi past, or the “Third Reich.
- Credit cards are not as widely accepted in Germany. However, ATMs are widely available throughout Germany.
Medical visa
- The German medical visa is issued to Ugandans who have the intention of seeking and receiving medical treatment in the country.
- Germany has good medical-care facilities, but treatment is not free for foreigners. If you are not a resident of Germany, doctors and hospitals may expect immediate payment in cash.
- A medical certificate issued by the treating medical institution in Uganda detailing the nature of the applicant’s illness and the reason treatment will be best gotten in Germany is required.
- A written confirmation of the applicant’s appointment with the medical doctor in Germany should be provided.
- The estimated duration of the treatment of the applicant’s illness should be stated in the letter from the medical doctor in Germany.
- Proof of advance payment of the medical fee is required.
- If traveling with prescription medication, check with the German Government to ensure the medication is legal in Germany.
- Due to Germany’s strict customs regulations, you are not allowed to receive prescription medication by mail without special permission.
Business visa
- This visa is issued to business travelers who have the intention of engaging in business activities during their time in Germany.
- Those who are visiting Germany for the purpose of attending courses, training, and cultural events are also eligible for this visa.
- Importers of used cars, spare parts, and electronic goods can also apply for this visa type.
- Your application will only be accepted when you have all the necessary documents required by the embassy.
- A letter of invitation from the German company the intending business traveler will be visiting is required. The letter must not be older than 3 months.
- If you will be attending a trade fair, conference, training, or cultural event in the country, an invitation for the respective purpose should be provided.
- A letter from your employer in Uganda is required. The letter must state the applicant’s job position and salary level.
- Proof of previous and current business transactions between the companies involved should be provided.
- Exporters of precious stones should be in possession of their license to possess or purchase minerals.
- Minors should ensure they are in possession of the original copy of their birth certificate.

Frequently asked questions
Is Germany safe to travel to
Germany is very safe. Health and infrastructure are of course modern and well kept up. Violent crime is rare in Germany, although travelers should be more careful in certain sections of larger cities. Petty crime such as pick-pocketing is more common there.
Should I learn German before traveling to Germany
Travelers that can speak German are at an advantage. Germans learn English in school but to varying degrees. Some Germans don't speak English at all. As in most countries, locals will appreciate the attempts of foreigners to learn their language.
What is the age of majority in Germany
The age of majority is the threshold of adulthood as recognized or declared in law. A person is considered an adult in Germany at the age of 18.
What can I do if they don’t recognize my school-leaving certificate in Germany
If your secondary school-leaving certificate is not recognized in Germany, you can gain entrance qualification to a German university by completing a foundation course (“Studienkolleg”). You first have to pass an entrance examination to participate in a foundation course.
