About Bahrain




Bahrain is an Asian island country in the Persian golf located to the east of Saudi Arabia and North of Qatar. Its capital city is Manama. Bahrain is known for supplying the most famous and valuable natural pearls in the world. Pearls were the country's major export before the discovery of oil.

Although Bahrain is humid for most of the year, it suffers a scarcity of rainfall almost throughout with most of its rains occurring in winter. By tradition, the Bahraini wear clothing such as the Abaya and Hijab for women, and Thobe and Ghitraa for men. Non-Muslims are at liberty to wear any comfortable and modest clothing of their choice.

Bahrain is an Islamic state and is 46% Bahraini and 45% Asian. Bahraini culture is very similar to that of its Arab neighbours. For the people of Bahrain, art involves reading of the Quran, poetry and story telling accompanied by flat drum beats. The national food is Machboos (fish or meat served with rice and sometimes, a tomatoe sauce topping). 

Some fascinating tourist locations in Bahrain are:
  • The Tree of Life: This 32 feet high, 400 year old tree is on a hill in a barren area of the Arabian desert. The tree is intriguing as Bahrain has very little rainfall all year round and yet, the tree has managed to survive (covered by lush green leaves) for 400 years. It is the only major tree in the area.
  • The First Oil Well: This historical site is proof that Bahrain was the first country on the Arabian side of the Persian gulf where oil was discovered.
  • Al Areen Wildlife Park: This is one of the five protected areas of land in the country. It is a nature reserve and zoo in Sakhir, Bahrain. 
  • Al Dah: This beautiful island with its clean, clear waters and serene beaches is a perfect tourist location for snorkelling and pearl diving.
  • The Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water park: A location ideal for both adults and kids alike, the park offers a recreational experience with fun rides and water games.

There are a number of festivals celebrated in Bahrain such as Eid Ul Adha held in January, Muharram (the Islamic new year), Ashura held in February, the Accession Day celebrated annually on the 17th of December and lots more.
