Lesotho is generally considered a safe country to travel to. However, even though it has served as a safe haven and a sanctuary from all the troubles that are hitting the rest of Africa pretty hard,Lesotho also has its issues with crime, both petty and violent, illnesses and poverty.

Lesotho is a democratic, sovereign and independent country with the unique characteristic of being totally surrounded by its neighbour, the Republic of South Africa. The country formerly known as Basutoland was renamed to the Kingdom of Lesotho upon independence from the UK in 1966.

Christianity is the dominant religion. The Catholic Church estimates that approximately 90 per cent of the population is Christian of whom 65 per cent is Roman Catholic and 25 per cent is Lesotho Evangelical, Anglican, and other Christian denominations.

Because of its altitude, the country remains cooler throughout the year than most other regions at the same latitude. Lesotho has a temperate climate, with hot summers and cold winters. Maseru and its surrounding lowlands often reach 30 °C (86 °F) in the summer.

The Kingdom of Lesotho is a landlocked country, surrounded entirely by South Africa. They became members of the Commonwealth in 1966 and made their debut in the 1974 Commonwealth Games which were held in Christchurch, New Zealand.
