In November 1838, Pitcairn Island became a British colony. The Island has a total land area of 47 sq. km, and Queen Elizabeth 11 is the Monarch. The capital is Adamstown.
Agriculture and tourism are the mainstay of Pitcairn’s economy. The Island has a very fertile soil as it allows for the growth of so many crops. There are plenty of fishes in the waters in Pitcairn. The Island has placid variety of bees and as such, produces one of the best and high quality honey in the world.
The weather on the Island is warm all year-round and they experience wet summers and dry winters. Summers (rainy season) are usually from November to March while winters are from April to October.
The island has suffered population decline since the late 90’s and may face possible extinction due to the very small number of people living on it. Pitcairn does not record many visitors annually so it is usually not crowded for people that enjoy peace and quiet environment.
In 2004, sexual assault charges were laid against seven men living on Pitcairn and six living abroad. In 2010, the mayor Mike Warren faced 25 charges of possessing images and videos of child pornography on his computer and was found guilty in 2016. In 2015, same sex marriage was legalized although there are no records of anyone practicing it.
Pitkern, a creole language is the official language on the island and it is widely spoken on the island. English is also spoken on the island. The two languages are taught in the school in Pitcairn. Education is free and compulsory for children from ages 5-16 years.
Fishing and swimming are the main recreational activities. Pitcairn Islanders usually have a public dinner in the Square, Adamstown when there is a birthday celebration or the arrival of a ship or yacht. This involve cooking a variety of foods, including fish, meat, chicken, pilhi, baked rice, boiled plun (banana), breadfruit, vegetable dishes etc.
The main mode of transportation on the island is by trekking or using a four-wheeled quad bike. People come into the island by boats or ships. There is no airport or seaport on Pitcairn Island.
Pitcairn Islands is very beautiful and as such there are really interesting places to visit. A number of must do’s when on the Island are;

- Visit the island’s marine reserve.
- Embark on a voyage.
- Sail the Island beautiful waters. There are few but very nice hotels and apartments on the Island for you to lodge when you visit.
